OBJECTIVE
"Theobjectiveofthisstudywas to evaluatetheacutetoxicity of PFOS(Perfluorooctane SulfonicAcid
PotassiumSalt) to thefreshwatermussel,Unio complamatus, during a 96-hourexposureperiodunderstatictest

[EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN
Freshwater musselswereexposedto geometricseriesof fivetestconcentrations and anegative (dilution water) control. Tworeplicatetestchambersweremaintained incachtreatmentandcontrol group,with 10
freshwatermusselsineachtestchamberfor atotalof 20freshwatermusselspertestconcentration.Nominaltest.

`Thetestsubstancewasreceivedfrom 3MCorporation onOctober29,1998andwasassignedWildlife InternationalLtd.identificationnumber4675. `Thetestsubstancewasdescribed as a white powder. Itwas identifiedas FC-95 fromlot nu2m17b (T-e 629r 5).Informationprovidedbythe Sponsorindicated apurity of 98.9%,andanexpirationdataof 2008. `The test substancewas reanalyzedby the Sponsor and the Certificate of

Analytical Chemistry
Water sampleswere collected at mid-depthfromcachreplicate test chamberof each treatmentand
controlgroupatthebeginningofthetest, at48hours (oldsolutions)andattestterminationtomeasure concenotftrhetaesttisubostnancse. The samples werecollectedinplastic(Nalgene)bottlesandanalyzed
immediately withoutstorage. Analytical procedures usedinthe analysis ofthe samplesareprovided in Appendix
IIL At test terminaalltreimaoinnin,g live mussels were sacrifofrcoillcecetiodn oftissue samples. Thetissue

Resultsofanalysestomeasureconcentrations of PFOSinwatersamples collectedduringthetestare `presentedin Table 1and inthe analyticalchemistry report (AppendixI). Nominal concentrsaelteciteodnfosr `useinthisstudywere5.7,11,23,46and 91 mga.i/L. Samplescollectedattestinitiationhadmeasuredvalues thatrangedfrom74to 96% ofnominalvalues. Measured valuesforsamplestakenat 48hoursrangedfrom 81to 9o9 fnomi% nal. Measuredvaluesforsamplestakenat 96hoursrangedfrom 89to 13 ofn0 omin% al. When
`measured concentrationsofthe samplesanalyzedattestinitiation,approximately 48hoursandat testtermination
