MINUTES of the TECHNICAL & RESEARCH COMMITTEE MEETING Rock and Slag Section NATIONAL INSULATION MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION Princeton Inn Frinceton, N, J. May 26, 1959 The Chairman called the meeting to order at 10:00 A. M, The Glass Section met jointly with the Rock and Slag Section for consideration of ASTM Speci fications C 264 and C 382, In attendance were: R, C. Parlett, Chairman of Technical Committee J, M. Morganroth I. REVIEW OF EXISTING SPECIFICATIONS (a) Draft 4-6-59* Proposed Revision ASTM C-264-55T. Changes were discussed and proposed as detailed in Appendix A attached. In addition the Secretary was requested to obtain expression from the Association membership as to the desireability of adding 60" length and 30" width to the standard sizes for Type 2 - Felts (Semi-rigid), After discussion as to the unsatisfactory wording of the "workman ship" paragraph (No. 7) it was recommended that the Secretary re f quest revision from ASTM Committee C-16 to eliminate the possible \ interpretation as to the manufacturer's responsibility for the installed condition of the insulation. Such revision should be in corporated in all specifications. 2- - ( REVIEW OF EXISTING SPECIFICATIONS (Cont, d). (b) Dr ait 4-1-59. Proposed Revision ASTM-382-56T. Changes were discussed and proposed as detailed in Appendix B attached. These included all applicable portions of Appendix A. (c) Proposed Revisions ASTM C-262, Specific tiems discussed and agreed upon were - (1) Change the last sentence of paragraph 5 to read "Thicknesses over 3 inches may he obtained*', (2) Paragraph 8 on Sampling should be changed to read - "The mineral wool industrial bait insulation shall be sampled for the purpose of tests in accordance with ASTM C-390-5 7TU, (3) Paragrapj 10 on Rejection should be revised to correspond with the paragraph on Rejection in Appendix A, In addition i t was recommended that the headings and format be ( changed to correspond with those in Proposed Revision to ASTM ^ C-264-55T. (d) Proposed Revision to ASTM C-263-54, Specific items discussed and agreed upon were (1) Change paragraph 6(a)(1) to read nWoven wire mesh, I-in, galvanised. No, 18 or 20 gage wire'1. (2) Paragraph 8 on Sampling should be changed to read - "The mineral wool blanket insulation, (metal-mesh covered, industrial type) shall be sampled for the purpose of tests in accordance with ASTM Designation C-390-57T* " (3) Paragraph 10 on Rejection shall be revised with paragraph in Appendix A* In addition it was recommended that the headings and format be changed to correspond with those imProposed Revision to ASTM C-264-55T, (e) Mineral Wool Blanket Type Pipe Insulation ASTM C-280, f v Specific items discussed were (1) Paragraph 1 Scope should be revised to include a maximum temperature limit. -3- (e) Mineral V/ool Blanket Type Insulation AST Me C-230 (Cont'd. ) (2) Paragraph 4(b)(3) should be changed to more correctly describe the width, since the presently given formula does not strictly apply. (3) Paragraph 6(a)(1) should be revised to read - "Woven wire mesh* 1-in. galvanized mesh'1. Since some manufacturers offer d product differing in details from that described, further consideration of this specification will be necessary before a new draft can be prepared. (f) Insulation, Thermal Block (MIL.-I**28i9). It was agreed that sincx no mineral wool block is currently accept able under this specification, no action can be taken at this time. II. Federal Specification HH-I-564 It was recommended that revision of this specification be added to the agenda of future meetings to eliminate the 225F class. III. Recommended Thicknesses This item was discussed, but no specific recommendations made, since joint action of the entire Technical Committee will be necessary. IV.
