Hie new booklet, "Plastics in the Waste Stream: Options for Practical Solid Waste Management," also presents information on the merits of recycling and incineration -- two waste management techniques that are growing in popularity as landfill space diminishes. Plastics have been targeted as disproportionately large contributors to municipal solid waste, especially as their use in packaging application grows. However, while packaging constitutes about a third of the solid waste total, plastics make up only three to five percent of all packaging discards, the brochure states. The 12-page publication, which is fully footnoted, also discusses the feasibility of source separation of waste components, the success of current recycling prograns and advances in incineration technology. A separate section is devoted to PVC (polyvinyl chloride, or vinyl) in the waste stream, including its ability to be recycled and it behavior in incinerator operations.
