The material offers many possibilities for experimenting. A sbestos, a fa scin a tin g m a te ria l, is becom ing a p o p u la r m edium o f expression fo r students. This a c tiv ity requires few m aterials and little equipm ent. Fibrous asbestos, wheat paste, backboards (celofex or p ly w o o d ), casein glue, knives, objects for creating texture, and powdered tempera are a ll th a t is needed. The asbestos is m ixed b y oourina dry asbestos into a large pan and m ixing wheat paste in a separate container. A d d wheat paste and a small amount of water to asbestos. Then mix with spoon or squeeze with hands. W hen re a d y fo r use, m ixture should form a sticky mass alm ost the consistency of m od eling cla y. Cut sections o f b a c k b o a rd into pieces o f equal size. Size w ill often be determ ined b y the number o f p e o p le to work on each section. Press asbestos m ixture onto glued areas and shape w ith fingers. Smooth with fingers or a da m p sponge. Press with sticks or other small objects to develop interesting textures. This a c tiv ity m ay ea sily be co rre la te d with other subjects. Some favorite topics are: maps, puppet heads, history of transportation, history of man, prehistoric animals, nature, astronom y, other cultures, etc. Sectional murals m ay be made separately and joined together when completed. This w onderful m edium of art w ill stim ulate much enthusiasm and m ay be carried o u t w ith a m inim um o f confusion. It is a self-directive experience requiring o n ly simple planning and p re pa ration . The results w ill be most satisfying for creative expression. Asbestos is an e xce lle n t m o d e lin g m aterial. The wheat paste acts as a binder. Before b e g in n in g a planned a c tiv ity w ith this m aterial some tim e should be a llo w e d for e x p e ri m entation and exploration. Using cardboard for back boards, asbestos can be shaped, a p p lie d without glue, re moved and reshaped if desired. This gives a fee ling and helps to develop an understanding for what the m aterial can do. Try it w ith your children. They w ill like it.
