On March 14, 2003, OPPTS management (Stephen Johnson, Susan Hazen, Charles Auer, Margaret Schneider) met with representatives of the Environmental Working Group (Ken Cook, Richard Wiles, Kristina Thayer, Jennifer Klein). The meeting had been requested by EWG.
EPA opened up the discussion by asking EWG to describe its views on the issues.
EWG indicated that they were very concerned about the hazards, exposures, and risks of PFOA, PFOS, and other similar but longer chain perfluorochemicals (e.g., CIO, C l2). In their view the available data, as represented in AR-226 and in additional information they had obtained, showed that PFOA and the other chemicals are widely present in people and that the chemicals produce a variety of serious adverse effects. They also noted that there is evidence indicating the environmental presence of telomer alcohols in rural and urban air sampling studies and showing that these chemicals can biodegrade to form PFOA.
EPA indicated its appreciation for the comprehensive review of hazards, exposures, and risks provided by EWG and requested that EWG provide additional details on new information they mentioned concerning bioconcentration of PFOA in fish (the references were subsequently provided: Martin et al. Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. 2003, 22, 196-204; Martin et al. Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. 2003, 22, 189-195).
