The meeting was called to order by the President. The Secretary was directed to read the corrected section of the Minutes of the meeting held at New Brunswick, N. J. on Dec. 10, 194B. It. was moved by Mr. Cryor, seconded by Mr. Dillon and unanimously voted that the Minutes as corrected be approved. 2. In. the absence of the Treasurer, the Secretary read the Treasurer's report. (copy attached). It was moved by Mr. Dillon, seconded by Mr. Marshall and unanimously approved that the report as pre sented be accepted and entered in the Minutes of this meeting. 3. The Secretary's quarterly report was read (copy attached) and in the discussion which followed several actions were taken. a. With regard to the supply of Primers available to the Secretary for general distribution, the members present MS 002394 PRODUCED JM-83 MT-001798 ATI-32 were polled to ascertain whether or not any extra copies could he obtained from the member companies. It was revealed that most of the members have depleted their stock of Primers and could not therefore furnish any additional copies. However, Mr. Scanlan, 'Philadelphia ' asbestos Co., and Mr. Pabel, Southern asbestos Co., did agree to supply some additional copies for the needs here established. b. The remarks concerning the development of protective clothing for firefighting purposes that is being pro moted at the "Wright-Patterson .hr Force Base, lero Medical Laboratory, prompted a considerable amount of discussion on that subject. It was'pointed out that asbestos textiles are apparently being completely dis regarded in this effort and preference seems to be dir ected to a construction composed of glass cloth, lami- noted with an aluminum or silver foil. It'was felt that asbestos textiles should be given some considera tion in these efforts and the Secretary was instructed to advise the membership regarding the proper parties responsible for this development so that a fair repre sentation of asbestos textiles- might be made. MT-001799 The Air Hygiene Committee had no formal report to offer, however, there was a considerable amount of discussion concerning the activities of this committee. Mr. R. E. Cryor reported his observations of the dust control problem and how it is being ' attacked in England. 'It was pointed out that many English manu facturers are ahead of those in this country with regard to the MS 002395 PRODUCED jM-83 ATI-32 protective measures being used and an example was cited wherein some of the machines such as spinning frames, etc., are com pletely enclosed and evacuated while in operation. It was felt that perhaps the most important factor accounting for this con-' dition lies in the somewhat mor strict legislative control exerted upon such operations in England. There was a general ' agreement that the activities of the Lir Hygiene Committee are very important functions of the Institute and that the committee's contributions to the industry are of inestimable value. The Secretary read excerpts from an article entitled ''Cancer and Environment".written by Graff Conklin and published in Scientific American, Vcl. 180, Ho. 1, Jan. 1949. It was felt that the in formation here offered unjustifiably incriminated asbestos as a carcinogenic material and it was felt that some clarification of the subject should be extended. Mr. Marshall suggested that the matter might best be clarified through and by Dr. 1.. J. Lanzo, Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., and Mr. Marshall was therefore directed by the President to confer with Dr. Lanzo regarding the subject. The Fiber Committee report was given by Mr. Marshall who presented a general review of the Canadian fiber mines strike and stated that at this date there appears to be no basis for an early settlement of the tie-up. L general observation would seem to indicate that the fibers being received from Canada are somewhat improved in quality over those received in past years. Mr. J. M. Weaver reported on the stockpiling activities which are being carried out under the direction of the Bureau of Federal Supply. L copy of this report is herewith attached and it is PRODUCED . Weaver reported for the Technical Committee and pre seated a review of the progress being made in revising and' estab lishing two government asbestos textile specifications (report attached). It was moved by Mr. Cryor, seconded by Mr. Dillon and unanimously approved that the Technical Committee report bo accepted and that an .expression of appreciation be extended to Mr. leaver for his skillful and untiring 'efforts in behalf of the interests of the Institute. ' 7. The Sales Promotion Committee activities were presented by Mr. S. V. Dillon in the form of the display cabinet which has . been under development by that group for the post several months. The cabinet was constructed by the Gardner Display Co., under the direction of Mr. H. T. Bain and the Sales Promotion Committee. Mr. Dillon led the discussion covering this development and the meeting was thrown open, for a general consideration of the dis play and for suggestions for possible improvements. It was generally agreed that the unit as a whole was for the most part very acceptable however some minor changes were recommended. a. There was some criticisms of a few of the photographs . and it was agreed that more illustrative pictures should . be furnished to replace those under question. b. There was also a considerable amount of discussion con cerning the prominence given cotton and other organic fibers in the flow chart. It was felt that the promi nence of these added fibers should be reduced since they ..................... It was also recommended that the Asbestos Textile Institute emblem presently displayed on the outside of the cabinet should be reproduced in the lower section of the interior layout. . Lb a result of the discussion, it was moved by Mr. Cryor, seconded by Mr. Marshall and unanimously approved that the Sales Promotion Committee should proceed to make the recommended alterations. Such changes are to be handled through the Chicago branch of the Gardner Display Company who will execute the alterations while the unit is in that area. It was recommended that the Sales Promotion Committee should call upon Mr. Denver and the Technical Committee for any required advice or assistance in making the necessary alterations. It is estimated that the unit, as presently constituted will cost approximately $525.00. On this basis, it was moved by Mr. Marshall, seconded by Mr. Dillon and unanimously approved that six such units, as approved following the aforementioned alterations, should be purchased for circulation according to plans to be formulated by the Institute in accordance with the recommendations of the Sales Promotion Committee. It was suggested by the Secretary and generally agreed upon that when one of these displays is sent to a school it should be accompanied whenever possible by a representative of the Institute who will give a lecture which will supplement the display and in this way will perhaps more effectively serve to present the exhibit. It was agreed that this first unit should remain in Chicago for the next two months or until the next General Meeting . It was moved by Mr. Marshall, seconded by Mr. Gatke and unani- mously approved that an expression of gratitude be. extended to Mr. Dillon, Mr. Bain, Johns-ManviTie Corp. and the Sales . Promotion Committee for their contributions to the development of this excellent' exhibit. ' . . 8. Mr. M. C. Shaw presented a report covering the activities of the Fellowship during the past quarter and briefly discussed the contents of the report (copy attached). ' 10.
