Chrysler Building 135 E. 42nd St. New York, New York Attention* Mr. Graham Edgar Dear Sir* We wish to acknowledge receipt of your letter of February 10th advising that due to the toxicity of tetraethyl lead, you prefer not to ship us this material for experimental purposes. While we advised that we were to use this material in sin insecticide, for your information, this insecticide will be used as a horticultural spray in much the same manner as the high toxic lead arsenate. We desire to add 2% by weight of tetraethyl lead to a coal tar creosote oil Dip and Disinfectant (9 lbs. tetraethyl lead per 50 gallons Dip) which is then emulsified in water using 4 pints Dip per 100 gallons water. The emulsion having then a lead content of 0.01/2 is then sprayed on the apple trees without the addition of lead arsenate. The apples picked from the trees sprayed with the tetraethyl lead emulsion were practically perfect. Spray residues were at a minimum and month control was considered the best the grower' had ever experienced. Trees on plots next to this experimental plot were badly infested with moth larva. These preliminary tests were made using 5 gallons of a mixture prepared as stated above0 The volatility of tetraethyl lead is apparently an advantage after application in reducing the lead residue to well below the U0S, Food & Drug administration tolerance.
