RE: REVIEW OF PROCEDURES FOR ASBESTOS REMOVAL
Attached are several resources that should serve as a refresher on our asbestos removal procedures. These Include a copy of Section 4.8 from our Industrial Hygiene Manual, a copy of Civil JSA C-7 on Insulation, and a copy of Material Safety Data Sheet #40, Asbestos.
Personnel involved in asbestos removal should have MSDS #40 reviewed with them periodically, preferably before major removal activities. The procedures outlined in Section 4.8 MUST be strictly adhered to by all persons involved in asbestos removal activities. Please note that samples of insulation must be submitted to Leroy Wagner for analysis. If Leroy is unavailable, the insulation must be treated as if it were asbestos unless appropriately marked or otherwise identified as non-asbestoa. For small jobs, it is appropriate to treat the material as asbestos to avoid unnecessary delays for sampling analysis. Wetting is required where practical and where evidence indicates potential for visible dust. Six (6) mil bags must be used for collecting and dispos ing of insulation containing asbestos. Remember that coveralls worn by employees during removal must also be placed in these bags as well. It is important to be sure bags do not have holes punched in them and are tied shut. Remember, insulation containing asbestos should not be dropped if unwetted or not encased in bags.
The special red asbestos dumpsters are the only dumpsters to be used for asbestos containing materials. (Again the materials must be in 6 mil bags.) Tyvek coveralls, asbestos approved respirators (Model 3M-8710), and asbestos labels are available in the Storeroom.
I might also remind each of you that persons involved in asbestos removal receive annual physicals which include chest x-rays, spirometry, and other tests. This is automatically conducted for Building Mainte nance personnel involved with asbestos removal. However, it's important to note thae others will need to be included as identified by individual supervisors who assign personnel to those activities. It will be the supervisor^ responsibility to alert the Medical Department of persons participating in these tasks.
Asbestos removal is a very critical environmental and industrial hygiene concern. I encourage each of you to continue to utilize the procedures and resources available to maintain our high asbestos removal standards. If you have questions on these procedures, please contact Leroy Wagner or me.
