AS3SST0S EXPOSURES CHEMICAL COATING PLANT EDISON, NEVf JERSEY
As you requested, aa air sample was taken by Mike DesMaraia on February
9, 1976, during a typical asbestos loading operation. The air sample
was taken for approximately five (5) minutes, with an open-face AA
Millipore type filter. The sscaling rate was approximately two liters
per minute. During the operation, the employee loaded 275 pounds of
PE-718 and 137k pounds of PE-720. The mixer was set at low speed.
Local exhaust ventilation was applied to the tank by means of a half
cover. The ventilation appeared to be more than adequate.

Survey
The Millipore filter was sent to Clayton Environmental Consultants and examined according to the latest NIOSH instructions for evaluating asbestos exposures. The sample showed 0.28 fibers per milliliter of air. inis is well within the present limit of 5 fibers per milliliter of air and approximately 6o of the proposed regulation of 0.5 fibers per milli liter of air.
Summary
The sample showed that the asbestos exposures are not excessive, even '.thin the new proposed regulation. Eovever, we would recommend tnau ve sample at least two or three more times before we form an opinion as to whether we will be able to comply with the proposed 0.5 fiber regulation.
