Hidden under its glittering giass and marole exterior is a supporting structure containing almost tourteen thousand tons ol structural steel pro tected bv a shop coat ot pure red lead paint. This partially completed frame work is shown in the accompanying photographs taken at various = taees during erection.
The steelwork was fabricated and erected bv the American Bridge Com pany wdth Dr. C. Earl 'X ebb. chief engineer, in charge ot the project for that company. Edwards and Hjorth were the consulting engineers.
The rust inhibit]ve red lead coat was shop applied and required four thousand three hundred gallons ot paint conforming to Federal Specifi cation TT-P-86. This specification rails for a readv-mixed red lead-lin seed oil paint weighing at least 25 lb. per gallon with a minimum pigment content of 77.5 percent bv weight. The pigment is composed entirely ot red lead, containing not less than 97 percent PbjO,. This paint is particu larly well suited for structural steel
priming since it combines the essential protective features of corrosion in hibition ana good adhesion. Among the outstanding characteristics of red lead as a corrosion inhibitive pigment is its aDiiitv to prevent rust creep and undercutting around areas denuded bv scratching and abrading in transit from mill to erection site.

have been a harmful source of sewage contamination by installing a drum type sewage solvent trap and neutral izer constructed entirely ot antimonial lead. This is a unique installation, conceived and designed bv engineers of S. B. Penick and Company.
Waste materials from one of the company's laboratories consists large ly of water which is often 3cid in reaction or may be carrying small amounts of immiscible solvents. Since this waste product is corrosive and must enter the city sewage system, pre ventive action had to be taken at the source to neutralize the acid and also remove the immiscible materials. Most sewage systems cannot tolerate corrosives because of possible damage to sewer construction as well as the detrimental effect of these chemicals on normal sewage disposal operations. Certain immiscibles such as oils and solvents tend to hinder disposal op erations besides contributing much to the malodor of the sewage. In inv event, this company like many others throughout the country has success fully managed to eliminate, at the outset, many hazards which might otherwise have arisen as a result of indiscriminate disposal of contami nated liquid waste products.

Thus purged ot it; harmtui contaminants, the purified waste "liters the sewer line near the top ot 'he neutralizing chamber. The Height ot this exit line is so designed as to maintain a constant liquid level m the large trap just above the steam coil. This facilitates effective removal ot the immiscibie solvents.
The construction details of this en ure unit are shown in the accompany ing iirawing. Antimomai lead 6 per cent) is used throughout as the mate rial ot construction because of its
greater strength characteristics over that ot soft lead. The shells of both traps consist of 3-lb. antimomai lead whiie the top of the large trap and the top and bottom or the -mail one consist of 12-lb. antimonial lead. The -team coii is ! . in. antimomai lead pipe with a `3-in. wall thickness.
This unique trail was installed a tittle over a rear ago orimariiv ;o protect the citv sew age lines, it has performed this function successfully having been cleaned and recharged onlv once during this period. No evi dence ot corrosion of the lead habeen observable.

was loaded with finely dispersed pow dered metallic lead. The lead added in this form gave the results desired: Specific gravity of the lubricant was greater than that of sea water and could no longer form a tell tale oil slick on the surface. Furthermore the lubricating characteristics and waterana corrosion-resistance were en hanced bv the presence of the lead.
'X'hile the development of a non slick. top-side lubricant served a unique i unction in submarine war fare. powdered lead as an additive in lubricants has served [or many vears in peacetime applications. Lead in the form of fine powder intimately mixed with grease markedly improves its lubricating properties. High quality leaded lubricants contain an average of 20 per cent hv weight of metallic lead which is introduced to the grease during agitation.
In use. the grease acts as a vehicle to carrv particies of lead powder to the gear or wearing surfaces where, under pressure, the lead powder coa lesces and forms a uniform laver or him of lead. An important and valu able property at such a lubricant is the 'act that the extremely tenacious lead lining or covering fills score marks, pitted or worn surfaces and thus, in effect, renews them. Once this has taken place, the lead coating itself becomes the bearing surface and since lead has excellent anti-friction prop erties. the result is smooth, frictionfree. auiet operation.
Lubricants containing metallic lead are exceptionally valuable in appli cations where gears and bearings are open or exposed to dirt, grit and abra sive materials. The comparatively soft film oi lead is capable of absorbing
such materials without injuring the bearing surface. Some large Herring bone gears tvpical of those with which leaded lubricants are used are shown in the accompanying illustration. Bv guarding against the combined action of corrosive mine waters and abrasion from slimes and grit, leaded greases have found wide application m the mining industry, in mill table gears and bearings, wire rope ana cable, bail mills, hoists and pumps.
The use ot powdered lead greases on w ire rope w hich consists oi strands of wire surrounding a central core of heme rooe is noteworthy. This sDeciai grease 'is applied to the hemp to pre vent excessive squeezing ot the indi vidual fibers as well 3s to provide con tinuous lubrication to the internal wire strands. In this manner kmcking of the wire strands and deformation of the core sections are largely elimi nated.

Red lead and sometimes btharge are added to ordinary grease tor use as a drill stem lubricant in oil well drilling operations. The lead com pounds act as anti-gailing agents on threaded joints. Red lead plus grease has also found extensive use as a thread jointing comDouna for nuts and boits exDosed to high temperature service such as oil locomotives and noiler installations.
.Not manv vears ago the use of addi tives in grease was almost unknown. Todav additives to give extreme pres sure properties, hign melting points, acid resistance, increased tenacity and tackiness, water resistance, loam re sistance as well as other properties are available in manv different modi fications and are widely used.

Lead Outstanding in Accelerated Corrosion Studv
N a recent test of various material's
I used in -oii waste and vent lines .'(.inducted under accelerated 'rendi tions in Port Worth. Texas, lead pipe Droved to be outstanding, having a relative life expectance ot more than -ix times anv of the other materials tested.
The results ot the test, outlined in a paper presented at the 1949 annual convention of the American Society oi ianitarv Engineering, was pre pared from data developed bv John D. Kane, chief plumbing inspector. De partment of Public Works. Fort W orth. Texas.
The test samples, ot materials cus tomarily used for soil, waste and vent lines and those recently suggested lor this use. were approximately 2 ft. in length and conformed to established plumbing size specifications. The sam ples were placed in a wooden rack which was then placed in a manhole carrying the return sludge from the Fort Worth sewage disposal plant's aeration basin. The samples were not submerged in the sewage but were kept 18 in. above the water line. Tests of the conditions surrounding the test -amples showed the sewage to be alkame. the condensed moisture on the .-amples acid and the atmosphere sur
rounding the test pieces to contain hvarogen sulphide. Of course, being an accelerated test, the conditions ot the test were more stringent than orainariiv found in the piumbing system but all of these conditions are present in the ordinary waste system to a lesser degree.
The duration of the test was one ear and alter this time, the weight loss of the lead, a simple method of figuring corrosion, was less than anv of the other materials tested. In addi tion. the lead was the only material not affected bv pitting, whereas all of the others were pitted in varying de grees and in one case, had pitted com-
