Answering letter date Subject Asbestos Materials Stores Dear Gerry: This letter is in regard to our discussion yesterday during my visit to your warehouse which was prompted by your request for information and recommendations in handling materials containing asbestos. The small amount of asbestos materials on hand in stores and the in frequent handling of such materials should not constitute a health hazard nor is it probable that exposures to asbestos fibers would reach or exceed those prescribed by law. Nevertheless, certain practices should be employed to assure that exposures do not occur. Recommendations for safe handling are as follows: 1. Training - Inform all employees who work in the warehouse of the hazards of asbestos fiber exposure. List all asbestos containing materials and require employees to become familiar with the list. 2. Storage - Keep all asbestos packing, gaskets, etc., where feasible, in plastic bags with bag closed by means of a tie wrap. 3. Caution Labels - Label all shelves and storage areas where asbestos materials are kept. The label should read as follows: CAUTION CONTAINS ASBESTOS FIBERS AVOID CREATING DUST BREATHING ASBESTOS DUST MAY CAUSE SERIOUS BODILY HARM 4. Housekeeping - All external surfaces shall be maintained free of accumulations of asbestos fibers. Cleaning should be done with vacuum cleaner. Absolutely no dry sweeping of asbestos dust or fibers should be permitted. BRG 0140 t Mr. Durocher -2- September 9, 1976 5. Waste Disposal - Asbestos waste, gasket materials, ends of packing rolls, etc., and vacuum cleaner bags containing dust from cleaning should be disposed of in sealed impermeable bags and labeled as shown in item (2) above. Efforts should be made not to purchase asbestos materials that are capable of emitting dust and fibers. Materials containing modified asbestos by the use of bonding agents, coatings, binders or other materials do not present the hazards as do raw materials, wastes or debris of asbestos. The Browns ville Plant does not purchase or install asbestos insulation, but quantities of old asbestos insulation exists in the plant, and removal should be done only when such insulation is wet and proper precautions have been taken to prevent exposure to any personnel in the area or surrounding areas.
