Valos Subject: Asbestos Content of Axle Plant Components Ref.: Your memo dated 11-13-79 Brake shoe linings, purchased as part of complete brake assemblies, are the only components at the Van Dyke and Sterling Plants containing asbestos* The vendor estimates that each lining is approximately 60% asbestos. It is unknown to the Brake Engineering Department as to whether handling of or exposure to the parts in the finished state is currently or will be harmful to Plant personnel. " V. Division Safety Engineers' recent check of'the Van Dyke Plant showed the breathing area to be innocuous. A check of Sterling Plant will be performed in the near future. Currently, there is no .use of asbestos in production parts at the -Indianapolis, Canton & Puerto Rico plants. Non-component parts of concern to the Safety Department are steam pipe wrapping with asbestos insulation, asbestos roping on furnace doors, and gaskets for certain piping applications.
