On January 17, 1967 a visit was made by the writer to the subject company. The visit was made for the purpose of returning air sampling bottles which had been forwarded to the Columbus office for d'.3t concentration determinations. Two of the bottles had been broken in transit. ?. Mr. Allen Bateman was contacted at the plant. 3. At this location the company manufactures component parts for auto mobile bodies. It. Five tubes had been received in a small wooden box. Styrofoam had been cut to snugly fit the inside of the box. Six holes had been drilled in the styrofoam to receive the bottles. The rubber stoppers with hollow center tubes had been left in the bottles. The center tubes and side outlet cf the bottles were capped. It was difficult to under stand how bottles so well backed could have broken. After examination and discussion with Mr. Bateman it was decided that the breaks were due to Jarring of the container which caused the spacer lugs on the center tube to strike the wall of the bottle with sufficient force to shatter the glass. It was suggested that in the future the center tubes be left out of the bottles. A solid rubber stopper should be substituted for the stonper used when air samples are taken. Results of the dust determinations were unsatisfactory. A blank of the alcohol used to collect the samples indicated an average dust concentration of Ij.Qlj mppcf for two slides. In returning the bottles, alBohol from the Division laboratory was included in sufficient Quantity for a number of samples. 6 Mr. Bateman conducted the writer to the location where the sample* 37th ALL-OHIO SAFETY CONGRESS AND EXHIBIT MAY 2; 3, 4, 1967 COLUMBUS, OHIO /`AN n u n u ui n v *n ! Workers had complained about dust from a revolving wire brush in a fixed location on a conveyor line. The brush cleans the conveyor line chain. The conveyor line extends through much of the plant, carrying various parts from one location to another. Accumulation on the chain would contain material from a number of dif ferent operations in the plant. AFSrhw Albert E. Scheibi*, P.E.
