BRAKE SYSTEM SERVICE LESSON ONE-MODULE 2 SERVICE PRECAUTIONS /l\ WARNING: DO NOT INHALE DUST FROM BRAKES, CLUTCHES, OR ASSOCIATED COMPO NENTS. INHALATION OF DUST CONTAINING ASBESTOS FIBERS COULD CAUSE CANCER OR ASBESTOSIS. COMPRESSED AIR OR BRUSHES MUST NOT BE USED TO CLEAN BRAKES, BRAKE DRUMS, CLUTCHES AND ASSOCIATED COMPONENTS. AN AQUEOUS BRAKE WASHER EQUIPPED FOR THIS PURPOSE SHOULD BE CAREFULLY USED TO REMOVE ANY DUST (ROTUNDA MODEL 164-R1208 OR EQUIVALENT). WEAR AN AP PROVED HIGH EFFICIENCY CARTRIDGE OR AIR LINE RESPIRATOR AND USE EXTRA CAUTION TO AVOID BREATHING THIS DUST. USE NON-ASBESTOS REPLACEMENT PARTS WHENEVER POSSIBLE. When performing brake service certain general precautions must be followed to help ensure quality service. The first rule is to know and adhere to all safety procedures as outlined in the Workshop Manual. Below is a list of other general precautions to follow during brake service, these include: Grease or any other foreign material must be kept off brake friction surfaces, including; shoes, pads, drums, and rotors. Always avoid nicking, chipping, or denting these surfaces. During disc brake service, exercise care to prevent damage to caliper pistons by protecting them from contact with metal or sharp objects. Do not attempt to clean or restore oil or grease-soaked brake shoes or pads. When contaminated brake shoes or pads are found, they must be replaced. Do not lay rotors "braking surface down" on the floor or bench. Always lay rotors on the "wheel side" to prevent braking surface damage and/or contamination. Always follow wheel tightening procedures as described in the Workshop Manual. Do not tighten lug bolts or nuts using an air impact wrench, doing so may cause a noise or vibration concern. Always ensure that the hub or axle flange are clean and free of rust or corrosion. Remove rust before rotor installation. Never use old brake fluid, or fluid from an open container when servicing brakes. Never reuse brake fluid that has been bled from a brake system. Use only DOT 3 brake fluid in Ford vehicles unless another grade is specified in the Workshop Manual. Never mix grades of brake fluid. Clean caliper mounting pins and lubricate bushing contact area with Disc Brake Caliper Lubricant (XG-3-A) or Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound (XG-3-A) or equivalent meeting Ford specifica tions ESE-M1C171-A.
