Summary
Asbestos nonitoring was done during the stripping of asbestos from piping and vessels in the penthouse of the foraer Coaaunity Hospital prior to deaolition of the penthouse. The nonitoring was done to assure that the use of approved job procedures was effective in controlling airborne concentrations of asbestos.
The area and personnel saaoles were within acceotable Units at 0.04 fibers/cc
and 0.19 fibers/cc respectively. The 0.19 fibers/cc represents a potential exposure since oersannel wore ail -eouired orotective equipment during the asbestos removal.

Asbestos monitoring was done daring the strioaing at asbestos from :;ping and vessels in the penthouse of the former Coeaunity Hospital prior to demolition of the penthouse. The monitoring was done to assure that the use of standard job procedures were effective in controlling airborne concentrations of asbestos.
METHODOLOBY
411 samples of asbestos were collected using calibrated Gilian NFS 113A air saepiing pumas to oull a xnown volume of air through 25 me cellulose ester membrane filters, 0.3 urn pore size. Samples were collected at a flow rate of approximately one liter aer minute. The ilters were prepared ana counted by McKee Environmental Health Services using phase contrast microscooy. 'he methoa useo is NICSH Method 7400.
EVALUATION CRITERIA
The evaluation of exposure levels was based on the following criteria:
Asbestos
OSHA PEL 2 fibers/cc*
* Beginning in January, 1987, the OSHA PEL will be 0.2 fibers/cc
The OSHA PEL (Permissible Exposure Limit) is the time-weighted average concentration for a normal 3-hour work day, 40-hour work week, to which nearly all workers may be repeatedly exposed without adverse health effects.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS
Taole 1 snows the monitoring results. The aircorne concentrations were within the acceptable limits. The potential exposure to personnel was 0.1? fibers/cc. All personnel wore the protective ecuipment required bv the 'Texas Operations Asbestos Handbook". The worxer removed asbestos from piping in the confines of the penthouse and cleaned uo the area at the end of the snitt. 'he area eamoie was taken in the center of the worx area.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Approved guidelines for asbestos handling ana removal were followed an the day of monitoring and showed acceptable levels of asbestos. These guidelines must be followed at all times.
The contractor with employees associated with the job must be
furnished with the resalts of this report, required to inform his
etoiovees ana
: n writing, that the informing nas been
completed. A Contractor Appencix is attached.
