"TIMKOTE" Mastic Pipe Coating Patent No. 2,963,204
Mr. R. C. Sargent Pipe Linings, a Division of American Pipe and Construction P. 0. Box 457 Wilmington, California
Company
Dear Mr. Sargent:
A few years ago a company operating in the Gulf Coast area began advertising mastic coated pipe prepared by the "TIMKOTE" process. Originally the process was designed for laying pipe from a barge. Recently U.S. patent 2,863,204 issued to P. H. Timothy et al. which appears to cover the apparatus and method utilized for the so-called "TIMKOTE" extruded mastic pipe coating. Attached is a copy of this patent for your information.
You may note that certain patents pertaining to the Somastic pipe coating process are cited as references. It is our opinion from a cursory examination that there is nothing about the "TIMKOTE" patent or process to cause concern to our licensees. The "TIMKOTE" process was discussed recently with Mr. R. P. White of H. C. Price Company and he stated that the nnijr_^Qmpetltive advantage Mr. P. H. Timothy, .aaneaeauto have" is his claim that the glass fiber in "TJMKCfl!B^^Slst^.aati.C)p. of barnacles. We" are doing some work on this subject now at Mr. White's request.

Mr. Bert A. Esplau Business Manager Pipe Linings, Inc. P.O. Box 457 Wilmington, California
Dear Mr. Esplau:
Mr. Gould advised me of your visit on March 18. I am sorry that I was out of town. He told me that you inquired about the present status of our Somastic Coating license with H. C. Price Company; studies on the use of glass fibre in the Somastic Coat; and about a "pipe nipple buttering compound."
We are currently negotiating with H. C. Price Company regarding their Somastic Coating license. Con sequently, I cannot advise you about prospects for a change in this situation.
Our laboratory studies on substituting glass fibre for asbestos fibre have only just begun. Before undertaking physical tests on strength, etc., we plan to make certain marine performance tests that will require several months to accomplish. We expect that it will be after mid-year before conclusive results are in hand.
V Y iP Concerning the pipe nipple buttering compound,
we have neither a patent nor a basis for licensing use of/ this material. I understand that information about the
compound originally was obtained by Standard's refinery
people from Master Builders, Inc. If you require further \
informatiorTaboux: this mauter iTsuggest you write to
Mr. D. K. Harger, Manager, El Segundo Refinery, 324 El
Segundo Boulevard.
Very truly yours,
w &
JtP.
