Subject: Danone - Call to Action for a Common Food Policy
Dear Commissioner,
Ahead of the publication of the EU Farm to Fork and Biodiversity 2030 Strategies, we would like to share with you our Danone's contribution to the debate on the future of food systems. Our conviction is that now more than ever - especially on the back of the COVID 19 pandemic, we need to rethink the resilience of our European food ecosystem. Our Call to Action for a Common Food Policy is our reflections on some of the policy challenges that will need to be tackled to get there. Over the past year, we have had the opportunity to discuss these challenges with many European stakeholders. We have defined three different streams:
Leverage agriculture as a solution to fight climate change and restore biodiversity: We call on the EU to support practices that strengthen agricultural resilience, such as regenerative agriculture practices (soil carbon sequestration, reduction of chemical inputs, enhancement of seed and species diversity). Reduce our impact on the environment: We call on the EU to ensure water and nature are fully protected, which includes a better enforcement of the EU Water Framework Directive. We also support the EU ambition to establish a more circular economy for packaging. Help people adopt planetary health diets: We call on the EU to build a framework that will incentivize consumers to make healthier choices. Some key propositions include making the Nutri-Score labelling scheme mandatory. We also encourage the EU to promote flexitarian diets that can alleviate the burden of meat production on our ecosystems, as well as to promote better hydration habits. We strongly believe that the European Union can shape a resilient and sovereign common food policy. We wanted to take this opportunity to express our full commitment to support you in this transition. Sincerely,
