As shown ill T ab le I , Dr. Dewin found d e f i n i t e in d ic a t io n s o f c h r y s o t i l e i n 17 o f th e sam ples (many o f th e s e a ls o had tre m o lite ) and d e f in it e in d ica tio n s o f tre m o lite but not chryso t i l e in an a d d itio n a l IS o f th e sam ples. These r e s u lts were obtained p r im a r ily by means o f X-Ray d i f f r a c t i o n , supplem ented in some c a se s by o p t i c a l m icr o sco p y and o th e r te c h n iq u e s . However, Dr. I.ewiu p o in ts Out ' on page 2 , paragraph 1 o f th e T able 1 Attachment th a t th e c h r y s o tile he h as i d e n t i f i e d in com m ercial p rod u cts shows s e v e r a l s ig n i f i c a n t d i f fe r e n c e s from " c la s s i c a l" c h r y s o t il e ; in th e lo c a tio n o f i t s X-Ray d i f fr a c tio n p eaks, in i t s appearance under the m icroscope, in it s r e a c tiv ity toward d ilu t e a c id , and in i t s b eh avior w ith re sp ec t to d if f e r e n t ia l therm al a n a ly sis.

"For ex a m p le, sam ples 89 and 163 were fo u n d b y Dr. hew i n t o c o n t a in 57. and. 10X o f e h r y s o t i l e , r e s p e c t i v e l y , hut e h r y s o tile was n o t found in th e s e sam ples by the o th e r lab oratories'. The e x p la n a tio n f o r th e s e d if f e r e n c e s i s a t t r i b u t a b l e l a r g e l y to Dr. Lew in's in c lu s io n , i n th e term ' ' e h r y s o t i l e 1' o f m in e r a l s p e c i e s 'w hich show s i g n i f i c a n t d i f f e r e n c e s from c la s s ic a l e h r y so tile , as d iscu ssed in paragraph 3 above.

T h e d i f f i c u l t i e s in v o lv e d "in a n a ly s in g t a l c and o t h e r sa m p les fo r s m a ll amounts o f a s b e s t o s have b een p o in te d out by many in v e s t ig a t o r s . I t is not su rp risin g th a t th e r e s u lts o f d iffer en t la b o ra to ries disagree so m e tim e s, e s p e c i a l l y i n t h e p r e s e n c e o f t r a n s i t i o n a l or" a l t e r e d m inerl o g i c a l s p e c i e s . M o reo v er, w it h r e g a r d t o th e two. v a r i e t i e s a f a s b e s to s o f concern h ere, i t i s u n fo rtu n a te th a t th one which i s a c le a r in hala t io n hazard to man, n am ely e h r y s o t i l e , p o s e s an i n t r i n s i c a l l y more d i f f i c u l t a n a ly tic a l problem than th e o th e r t r em p iite, w hich has not yet b e e n shown t o p r e s e n t a b i o l o g i c a l h a za rd . T his i s due i n p a rt to the. le s s prom inent X -ray d if f r a c t io n peaks o f e h r y s o tile and to th e f a c t that th e fib e r s are o fte n to o sm all to b e seen in the o p tic a l m icroscope.

On t h e b a s is o f in fo r m a t io n a v a ila b le a t p r e s e n t, I recommend c o n s id e r a tio n o f th e fo llo w in g p rocedu ra. The powders s h a ll be examined f i r s t by X -ray d iffr a c tio n , w hich hs a S en si t i v i t y o f th e o r d e r o f 17. f o r e h r y s o t i l e and somewhat g r e a t e r s e n s i t i v i t y

My r e s e a r c h group has b een en gaged in s t u d i e s o f t a l c and i t s a c c e s s o r y m in era ls c o n tin u o u s ly s in c e J u ly 1971, and we are c o n tin u in g t o work i n t h i s f i e l d . We have u n d e rta k en t o i n v e s t i g a t e th e fo llo w ing problem s:
A. T ab u lation o f th e x -r a y d i f f r a c t i o n d ata fo r t a lc and a l l s o lid phases (w hether n a tu r a lly occu rrin g , or added in the .course o f p ro cessin g ) encountered w ith ta lc in m ineral, in d u str ia l, cosm etic ' and pharm aceutical p rod u cts.

E lu cid ation o f the x -ray d iffr a c tio n spectrum ( i . e . , p recise lo c a t io n s and r e l a t iv e i n t e n s i t i e s o f peaks and v a r i a b i l i t y th e r e o f) of c h r y s o tile . 1 . The c h r y s o t i l e t h a t i s fo u n d i n com m ercial t a l c s I s g e n e r a lly , d iffe r e n t in s ig n ific a n t resp ects from the c h r y so tile that occurs as
m assive, fib ro u s growths in v ein s in serp en tin e ro ck s. That i s , the fo r mer has. d i f f r a c t i o n peak s t h a t may d i f f e r from th e l a t t e r by as-much
as 0 .2 A ( a t 7-3 A ); i t i s more r e a c tiv e toward d ilu t e acids,* i t
shows a d if f e r e n t ap p earance u n d er th e m icr o sc o p e ; and i t s DTA en d o-
therms and exotherm are s h ifte d r e la t iv e to th ose o f the la t t e r (and
apparently dim inished}.

S u b je ct t o th e q u a l i f i c a t i o n s in h e r e n t i n th e -above, we have ob tain ed 'q u an titative estim ates of th e c h ry so tile contents of about 200 com m ercial ta lcu m powder s p e c im e n s . Vie have a l s o determ ined the con ten ts o f the other m inerals in th ese products, in clu d in g trem olite, q u artz, c h lo r ite , d o lo m ite, and o th e r s . There i s no am biguity in the id e n tific a tio n of these la tte r sp ecies, b u t,th e quantitative r e s u lt s fo r th e se are a ls o a ffe c te d by the s e g r e g a tio n problem, which i s most serio u s f o r th o se c o n s titu e n ts p resen t in th e sm a lle st amounts.
7- Most o f th e com m ercial t a l c s t e s t e d a r e f r e e o f any d e t e c ta b le amount mf any o f th e a s b e s t lf o r m m in e r a ls , a c c o r d in g t o th e c r i t e r i a enumerated above. Thus, th ere appears to be an adequate supply of t a lc fo r which th ere i s no am biguity about the absence of c h r y so tile o r tr e m o lite . In about 10$ o f th e sam ples t e s t e d , th ere appear to be' d e f i n i t e l y d e te c ta b le amounts o f e it h e r c h r y s o t ile o r trem o lite p r e se n t.
