As a m atter of fact, having completed the literature search, it is apparent to us that the possibility of an association between lung cancer and asbestosis is.much m ore likely to exist in asbcctos factories than in mining operations, T o r exam ple, of 99 cases which had boon r e ported up to 1955, at least 80 appear to have occurred in asbestos w orkers o th o r t h a n m i n e r s . .A n u m b e r w e r e w o m e n , and the o c c u p a tio n s given were: weaver, carder, mattresB m aker, lfaggcr, bagger, pipe coverer, spiunor, etc. Two specific articles which m ention the typo of exposure and at by Doll (l)-and that bv Isselbacher, ct.al'. (2). Seventeen ctibU i s t u d i e d by G loyne and 31 r e p o r t e d by M e r e w c t h e r , a s w ell as t h r e e mentioned by H arrison and one each by Cureton and Owen occurred in Lngland. If m y inform ation is c o rre c t, there ia no mining of asbestos in Lngicnd, and these m ust all havo been w orkers in textile or sim ilar jobB. In this country, the ten cases reported were apparently ail in textile w orkers. The fir at case, reported in 1935 by Lynch anc Smith was a weaver in an a o b e c to a f a c t o r y fo r 21 y e a r n , i o s e l b a c h e r 1a c a s e s in v o lv e c a c o n t r a c t o r ' s helper engaged in cutting and sawing asbestos board and sorter in an asbestos mill.
