,\ B E Goodrich J91S NEWS BULLETIN The National Cancer Institute has given the University of Louisville Medical School a three year grant amounting to almost $2. 8 million to continue the medical surveillance program as well as include other elements such as statistical data bank, treatment program, worker educational program, re habilitation program, and professional education programs. In many ways this grant will continue many of the efforts already begun by our plant or those in progress at the University of Louisville Medical School which were made possible by a Goodrich grant to the school last year. This grant will help us develop a more perfect medical surveillance program for use in our plant. It can also be used as a model medical surveillance program for industrial workers in general. The tests covered in this contract are tests over and above those required by Occupational Safety and Health Act regulations. The Company will continue to provide basic medical care for all employees. The following is a summary of the program: 1. An out-patient laboratory testing program for present and former employees of B. F.Goodrich Company's plant in Louisville, Kentucky. 2. A data bank. The chemical-exposure and work history data as well as a continuously updated record of the results of laboratory tests of the workers will be kept in a computer file at the University of Louisville where it will be subject to review and study which hopefully will lead to a better understanding of the chemical exposure program and serve as a means of health surveillance of any health problems. 3. An education program aimed at two groups--the workers and their families constituting one group and health professionals constituting the other. The worker education program is intended to increase the employee's knowledge about the hazards involved in industrial settings, providing them with solid information that will lead to informed caution. Professional educational programs will consist of a major national symposium to be held in Louisville in 1978 on the vinyl chloride liver disease problem and an outreach education and consultation service by the University to institutions and groups in other parts of the United States facing similar problems. 4. A psychosocial rehabilitation study program. This will be an indepth program focusing on the psychosocial rehabilitation and other factors associated with this work environment; i.e. means of assessing reluctance or failure to obtain medical screening or participation of educational programs. As you can see, we very much need the continued cooperation of all -- employees by making themselves available for the examinations and the tests given.
