Leveling and Film Build The rheology imparted to exterior house
paints by UCAR Latex 508 is superior to that of commercial acrylic latexes designed for this market. Pleasing brushability and excellent film build are characteristic of this latex and complement its outstanding properties of flow and leveling. Improved erosion resist ance derives from the rheology of the latex and the inherent toughness of the polymer.
Wet Adhesion and Water Resistance Since moisture is a principal cause of
heavy damage to paint on wood substrates, coating failures by blistering and peeling can be related in most cases to water sensitivity of the polymer, wet adhesion, and moisture va por transmission (MVT) rate of the latex film.
As demonstrated in Tables 1 and II, UCAR Latex 508 has excellent wet adhesion and blister resistance, a low degree of swelling in water, and a low moisture vapoT transmis sion rate. Thus, paints based on UCAR Latex 508 are expected to protect structures from early failures usually associated with mois ture.

Color Development and Acceptance UCAR Latex 508 is compatible with all of
the major universal colorant systems. Evalua tions of dispersed colorants have been made in a variety of exterior paint formulations with most of the commercially available col orants and it was found that excellent color development and acceptance can be obtained without resorting to expensive reformulation of existing paint lines.
Any special color system can be discussed with your local Union Carbide representative.
Paint Stability and Can Corrosion Excellent stability can be obtained with
paints made from UCAR Latex 508. Freezethaw, heat aging, and ambient-temperature shelf-aging tests are methods of evaluation. The stability of UCAR Latex 508 in a paint containing 1.0 pound per gallon of zinc oxide is illustrated in Table III.

Exterior Testing Program
Paints based on UCAR Latex 508 have been on exposure since April, 1970. on Union Carbide's South Charleston, West Virginia, test fence. Exposure series are also on test in Florida. In addition, test houses are located in key geographical areas around the country.
Several series contain non-mercurial mildewcides and/or zinc oxide. Substrates in clude both self- and alkyd-primed woods, chalky surfaces, glossy alkyd enamels, cement-asbestos shingles, and factory-primed hard-board.
Exterior gloss trim paints based on UCAR Latex 508 have been on exposure since May, 1971. Results on these exposures show that this latex is a suitable binder for exterior
semi-gloss paints. These natural weathering tests have been
complemented by accelerated testing in the Weather-Ometer, stress-strain studies on ex posed paint films, and studies of polymer properties.
Variations of Mechanical Properties with Temperatures
Ideally, the polymer used as a binder in exterior paints should have good mechanical properties over a wide range of temperatures. An exterior paint applied over wood must be able to withstand the dimensional changes of the wood at low temperatures without film rupture. Therefore, the binder must exhibit

some cold flow and elongation under strain. Conversely, at the higher service temperatures encountered in the summer months, the binder must not display excessive flow or low tensile strength at very low strain rates. Coatings that contain binders that exhibit excessive flow will tend to retain surface dirt, even though the coating is not tacky to the touch.
The variation of mechanical properties with temperature is most often described by the relationship between temperature and stiffness (the force in pounds per square inch required to produce an elongation of one percent). The curves in Figures 1 and 2 show this relationship for UCAR Latex 508 poly mer and a leading commercial acrylic latex polymer.
The glass transition temperature (Tg) of UCAR Latex 508 determined from this curve is 20C. The Tg measured by the torsion pendulum method is 28C. This latter value is higher because the testing frequency or strain rate is about three orders of magnitude higher in the torsion pendulum method. At very low strain rates, such as those involved in the dimensional changes of wood, the Tg will be lower than 20C,
The stiffness-temperature relationship does not completely describe the change in mechanical properties with temperature. The correlation between tensile or elongation and temperature may not be the same for poly mers with a similar stiffness-temperature rela tionship. Table IV shows that at temperatures below Tg the polymer of UCAR Latex 508

exhibits good tensile strength and elongation superior to that of commercial acrylics.
Stress-strain data on exposed paint films have been used to predict long-term resistance to checking and cracking of paints*'L The tensile strength of paint films is plotted against exposure time in the Weather-Ometer. During the initial exposure, tensile strength increases, then levels off and declines with longer exposure time. These transitions are believed to be related first to the loss of volatile plasticizing components such as water and coalescing solvents; second, loss by leach
ing of minor plasticizing ingredients such as emulsifiers and defoamers; and third, by gradual increase in polymer molecular weight through the mechanism of crosslinking. Pro longed exposure leads to degradation of the binder and a slight loss of tensile properties. A paint film with good exterior durability will take a relatively long exposure time (2,000 to 3,000 hours) to reach maximum tensile and then show a slow decline in tensile strength.

Natural Weathering Four years' weathering of paints based on
UCAR Latex 508 shows that it provides tint retention, resistance to chalking, resistance to dirt pickup, and adhesion at least equal to commercial acrylic latexes. This is demonstr ated in Table VIII.
Unmodified paints based on UCAR Latex 508 at 30 to 50 percent PVC, show good
adhesion to a chalky surface after three years' exposure (Table IX). However, 15 to 20 percent volume solids replacement with a long oil alkyd is recommended as a margin of safety over highly chalked surfaces.
The excellent alkali resistance of paints based on UCAR Latex 508 is indicated by 12 months' exposure over "Transite" on south 45 in Miami, Florida (Table X).

Formulation
The versatility of UCAR Latex 508 is particularly evident in formulating the latex. It is easily incorporated into exterior paint formulations to obtain desirable paint proper* ties such as leveling and film build, and color acceptance and development. It shows good compatibility with long oil alkyds at 15 to 40 percent modification by volume, and can be readily formulated with zinc oxide.
A number of filming aids has been investi gated with UCAR Latex 508 as shown in Table XI. These are listed in order of decrea sing efficiency according to slope number. This number is obtained by adding various concentrations of filming aid to the latex and determining the minimum filming tempera ture (MFT). A plot of MFT versus filming aid concentration yields a straight line from which the slope can be calculated. The higher the slope number, the more effective the filming aid is in lowering MFT.
For the best low temperature coalescing properties, 5 percent of butyl CARBITOL ace tate or phenyl glycol ethers based on polymer solids of UCAR Latex 508 is recommended.
If a less effective filming aid is used, such as UCAR Filmer 351, about seven percent is recommended.
Exterior paint formulations for UCAR Latex 508 are shown in Tables XII - XVI. These include a high-quality white, tint bases, and deep tones, each with and without alkyd modification. These paints are recommended over all types of masonry, previously painted wood, and unpainted wood surfaces. Alkydmodified systems are recommended for use over heavily chalked surfaces. Other formula tions including medium tint bases, exterior semi-gloss, and interior fiat and semi-gloss paints are available on request.
High-Quality White Exterior Paint E-1268
This formulation (Table XII) gives good one-coat hide, excellent leveling, and provides excellent resistance to dirt pick-up. It con tains a non-mercurial as a can preservative and zinc oxide as a mildewstat. The dispersantsurfactant system gives excellent can stability to the paint.

UCAR LATEX 508
AN ACRYLIC INTERPOLYMER LATEX FOR EXTERIOR HOUSE PAINTS
TOXICOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
Animal experiments on closely related products indicate that UCAR Latex 508 will have a low order of acute toxicity in humans. Feeding large doses to animals would not be expected to cause harm, and skin and eyes should not be irritated.
UCAR Latex 508 contains vinyl chloride. To minimize residual monomeric vinyl chlor ide content, the process for manufacture of UCAR Latex 508 includes a post-reaction period. However, some unpolymerized mono mer remains. Although the monomer is be lieved to be absorbed or occluded within the polymer particles of the latex, some release is expected to occur during storage or process ing. Our analytical surveillance program to date indicates that the vinyl chloride mono mer content of UCAR 508 can be expected to be less than 150 ppm. Under normal condi tions of paint manufacture, this level of monomer should not contribute enough vinyl chloride to the work place to approach the 50
ppm worker exposure level specified in the Emergency Temporary Standard. The actual level of monomer in the work place, how ever, will depend on operating conditions, equipment, temperatures, ventilation, and the like, in your manufacturing facilities and should be monitored. Also, preliminary studies with paints made from UCAR Latex 508 show that vinyl chloride releases slowly from the paint, that painters applying the paint by roll or brush in a closed room are exposed to low levels of vinyl chloride.
Laboratory and process studies are in progress to further reduce monomer levels so as to comply with permanent governmental safety standards once they are defined. Studies are also in progress to define better the conditions that influence rate of mono mer release from the latex during processing and from paints during application and drying.

STORAGE AND HANDLING
Storage and handling procedures should follow the normal practices recognized as desirable for polymer dispersions. Storage tanks should be corrosion resistant. Stainless steel, fiber glass and glass-lined, baked phe nolic or epoxy resin-lined steel are suitable. Piping and circulating pumps should be care fully selected for this service. The latex is stable to prolonged heating at 120F.
UCAR LATEX 508 AN ACRYLIC INTERPOLYMER LATEX FOR EXTERIOR HOUSE PAINTS
(48.8C.) and will recover from freezing; nevertheless, such treatment tends to reduce the stability of any latex. Such extremes of temperature should be avoided.
No personnel should be allowed to enter a storage tank that has been used for UCAR Latex 508 unless the atmosphere has been analyzed and found to be safe (See Toxicolo gical Properties).
FDA STATUS
UCAR Latex 508 is cleared by FDA under Regulation 121.2571 for use as a component of the uncoated or coated food contact surface of paper and paperboard
intended for use in producing, manufacturing, packaging, processing, preparing, treating, packing, transporting, or holding dry food.
