Kehoe College of Medicine University of Cincinnati Eden Avenue Cincinnati 19, Ohio Dear Bob: May 18, 1949 With reference to Mrs. Fortlage's memo of May 13, I am afraid that you gave us this time more credit than we deserved: you and I discussed the subject when you were in my office, but no written memo has as yet gone out. I am very sorry about the delay which is due to the very high pressure of our main project, and I am at last enclosing George Thomson's and Jim Hinkamp's memo to me on the subject. To put it perhaps in plainer terms, we have some serious doubts regarding the accuracy of their data as reported, and beyond that, as I mentioned to you, the big question is what kind of experiment will be sig nificant from the point of view of health hazards. One thing stands out clearly, namely, that ivhen you evaporate leaded gasoline you leave behind a residue high in TEL, which under some conditions will cause a serious hazard. On the other hand, when you evaporate Vitol you evaporate at the beginning, a highly toxic composition, but you leave behind a harmless resi due. This is about as far as we laboratory chemists can go, and from here on it is up to you physiologists either to interpret those data in terms of their toxicological significance, or to design the type of experiment which will give you the answer you want.
