MONTHLY HIGHLIGHT REPORT - JUNE 1970 RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS DIVISION
SECRET - COMPANY CONFIDENTIAL
I. INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS (South Bound Brook)
A. Felts and Papers
The build-up of foreign materiel in the SBR latex tanks during the last carboxylated resin flooring run at Erie was attributed to a "creaming" caused by loading the latex hot and lack of agitation. It is also suspected that there vras some contamination in the tank truck. Material is in process at VThitehall and no difficulties have been reported to date.
Gasketing
A test run of G-600 gasketing was made using Chevron in place of Flintkote bituminous emulsion. Results were satisfactory and con version will result in a $2,000 per year reduction.
Flooring Felt
Test rolls of F-556 flooring felt using TCD latex have been sent to Building Products of Canada Ltd., for evaluation. Laboratory-pre pared samples of a whiter asbestos sheet have been submitted for approval to National Floors Co. and if accepted a plant run will be scheduled.
3. Thermal Insulation
Calsilite formulations have been successfully developed in the laboratory using a special bleached sulfate pulp and no asbestos. Physical properties before and after soaking heat appear to be quite adequate and a plant trial is now scheduled.
C. Automotive
Moldable Mastic Sound Deadening Membrane
A successful compression molding test was made at an outside pro cessing plant using a special moldable mastic composition. This method is superior to vsovum forming for shapes that require deep draw. Marketing plans to obtain prints of a Ford Fairlane dash so that a mold can be made for vacuum forming trials. Vacuum forming should be acceptable for this configuration and the mold is only a fraction of the cost that would be required for compression molding.
Non-staining Mastic
A second plant trial of non-staining mastic has been run at Joliet and samples have been submitted to Chrysler for their approval. GAF laboratory tests show the product meets Chrysler specifications.
