Consulting Actuaries 40 IV. Third Avenue Columbus 1, Ohio ,! Cx- Jooq Dear John: In the enclosed articles, please note some of the as to other groups who will become very much interested in this subjectfireproofing or heat insulation, lagging of steam pipes, sheet metal workers and boiler makers, as well as sacking - sorter of sacks. In this later category, I would suggest that you bring this to Dr. Bindley's. attention, to exclude the sorting of asbestos material in sacks. You'recall he has an older age population, which fall into the higher rates for lung cancer because of age, however, if there is an asbestos exposure, it is going to be very difficult to differentiate between the two. Incidentally, several cases will be reported in New York of carpenters, exposed to asbestos, who developed cancer of the pleura, besides plumbers previously recorded. In Fowler's article, he refers to a laundry workerand`one who cleaned bags in an asbestos factory. I looked up in the Ohio Manufacturing Directory for lists of plants using asbestos, because I feel that some one should warn then! of the potential risk, so that adequate precautions and controls could be instituted. However, they are all very small plants', and may not be concerned, although exposure undoubtedly would be higher. The four digit industrial classification is 3292 and 3293 would identify the names and addresses of all the companies. However, undoubtedly, they miss companies, where it is not a principal product such as Philip Carey. (The directory I have is 1961) . I enjoyed reading your release about your new building- - sounds fine -- so in November you will be moving. That will be a great day, somehow your staff ought to have a pre-moving "session", in which it is emphasized that "change" does have certain psychological effects, so that everyone will be patient and tolerant during that trial period. V 2_ Dear John: I am enclosing a copy of an Editorial which appeared in the British Medical Journal, July 25, 1964, whi'ch has just come to my attention'pry ''Asbestos and Malignancy", and two additional articles on the same subject in the same issue, "Exposure to Asbestos and Mesothelioma of the Pleura" by Fowler et al and "Diffuse Mesothelioma and Exposure to Asbestos Dust in the Merseyside Area',' by Owen. The nature of the Editorial and the articles that follow, are focusing increasingly on the relationship of asbestos and cancer. This evidence which will be augmented further dui'ing October 19-21 in New York, in the "Conference.on the Biological Effects of Asbestos", which is being sponsored by the New York Academy of Sciences. Following this on October 22-24, there will be a series of small-meetings of the Working Parties of the International Union Against Cancer, which will work.toward developing international cooperation on research, pertaining to asbestos and malignancy. I should like to call your attention- to the fact, that the published data, not only relates' to occupational exposures such as occurs in insulation workers, as reported by Selikoff, but to . atmospheric pollution, andi exposure outside of the work environment, as originally reported by Wagner, and Kiviluoto. Secondly, the article by Truan pertaining to Canada, has been disputed .`incT thi's' no longer represents an adequate or valid appraisal epidemiologically of the situation. As you can see from these articles, and previously reported investigations, asbestos is being associated with cancer in more than one part of the body, with data showing the lung, pleura, peritoneum as definitely involved, and possibly, the combination of stomach, colon and rectum. I know that.you are very much interested in this subject, and would like to read these articles. Personal regards, TFM/a attachment i Thomas F.
