Grumbles October 9, 1985 TRANSPORTATION HAZARD CLASSIFICATION FOR ETHER SULFATES VISTA Vista Ether Sulfates exhibit flash points in the 74-80F range when tested by the Pensky-Martin test. As such they would be considered a flammable liquid for domestic transportation purposes. However, according to DOT regulations, 49 CFR 173.115(b)(2), aqueous solutions containing less than 24 percent alcohol with flash points below 100F is considered to be a combustible liquid. This exception paragraph allows us to class our ether sulfates as combustible liquids for domestic transportation. However, for IMDG regulated shipments (exports) I can find no such exemption, and these products would be classed as Flammable liquids, class 3.3.
