MONTHLY HIGHLIGHT REPORT - FEBRUARY 1970 RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS DIVISION SECRET - COMPANY CONFIDENTIAL I. INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS (South Bound Brook) A. Felts and Papers Gasketing A plant trial of Neoprene asbestos gasketing was successfully r -.n at Erie. The new product, GC-800, supplements the acrylonitrile sheet and was designed to meet Detroit Gasketing Company's specifications. Sample rolls have been submitted to them and additional material is available for evaluation by other customers. B. Cooling Tower Fill An Erie plant test run produced an improved cooling tower fill saturating paper which has wet tensile strength within specifications. Sample rolls have been shipped to the Marley Company and a Research man will be present to witness the trial run in their plant. C. Automotive Attempts to vacuum-form wheel house sections and a heater cover in an outside shop were unsuccessful. The draw depths required appear to be too great for the sound deadening, moldable mastic membrane. Successful runs were made, however, of a sail area section and a rear speaker cover. The molds for these parts were made with glass reinforced polyester using forms submitted by the car manufacturers. It is now planned to explore the possibilities of forming the deep draw parts by pressure molding between two polyester mated forms. Samples of rear speaker covers and sail area units will be delivered to Detroit the last week of February for sound testing by automobile engineers. Chrysler requires a special non-staining unit for their sail area which is now purchased from Globe Manufacturing. The present GAP product will not meet this new specification and work is underway at both South Bound Brook and Joliet to develop a suitable mastic for this service. D. T/NA-100 - Insulation Jacketing A modified T/NA-100 product is being run on an experimental basis for Zeston, Inc., a nationwide distributor of accessories to the thermal insulation industry. They are interested in marketing a version of T/NA-100 and T/NA-100/Vapour Barrier with their private label. MICH08511
