REPAIRING OR DISPOSING OF ASBESTOS INSULATION A General Plant procedure covering Asbestos Dust Control Is presently in review and will be Issued in the near future. This procedure will set forth the practices and precautions to be observed, consistent with "OSHA" requirements. During the interim the following rules should be observed vhen working with asbestos insulation and like materials to overcome dust hazards involved. 1. Wet down asbestos insulation be removed and continue wetting down during removal, where practical. 2. Wear a respirator (Bureau of Mines approved DustTQ& BM-21-66 Model&gsr-hould be used): e When removing insulation where it is impractical to wet down, such as hot steam lines. When cutting, sawing, shaping insulation with hand tools and wetting down is impractical. When emptying waste containers, cleaning floors, equipment, etc. where wetting down is impractical. 3. Disposal of asbestos waste and scrap is to be made in "ASBESTOS" dumpsters that have been placed in strategic locations throughout the plant. These dumpsters are painted an alert orange and prominently marked "FOR ASBESTOS SCRAP ONLY." The procedure is: e Asbestos waste and scrap are to be placed in plastic bags, tied, and labeled with special caution tags at the time it is put in the Dumpster. Plastic bags (Cat. No. 02-61-M8-001) and Caution tags (Cat. No. 02-8*1-45-007) are available in Stores. Where an asbestos dumpster is not available.
