The Institute is a division of The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. and is headquartered in Wayne, New Jersey. The Institute was established in 1982, with a dual charter to promote and protect the growth of the vinyl indus try. It maintains an active program of technical research designed to help integrate vinyl products into all phases of the solid waste management pro cess, and also operates an information center to answer questions about vinyl and the environment. To reach the Vinyl Environmental Resource Center, call 1-800-969-VINYL (8469). For more information about the products listed, please contact the companies listed and not the Vinyl Institute. WHAT DOES "RECYCLED CONTENT" MEAN? On July 28,1992 the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced guide lines for environmental marketing claims. The guidelines are recommenda tions, not enforceable regulations. They are intended to reduce consumer confu sion and prevent false or misleading use of common environmental terms. The FTC's definition of "recycled content" is: materials that have been recovered or diverted from the solid waste stream, either during the manufacturing process (pre-consumer) or after consumer waste (post-consumer). In this directory, "post-industrial" refers to vinyl scrap produced from manufacturing processes in which the end product is not for consumer use. The companies listed in this directory have voluntarily provided the pre-consumer, post-consumer or post-industrial content of their products. The Vinyl Institute supports the FTC's guidelines.
