Following your suggestion, transmitted through your secre tary by phone to me,; I acted as Chairman pro tem for the AIHA Program Committee at this joint IDOetiag. Prior to the combined meeting, Dr. Xronenberg, Major Brandt and I discussed the parti cular needs and requirements of our Association and believed it would work best for the group that the governmental conference be held on Monday and Tuesday April 24 and 25 as they desired, and Ithat the AIHA be invited by this governmental group to autend their meetings on Tuesday so that contributions by the governmental industrial hygienists of interest to other industrial hygienists could be made generally available. The meetings of the AIHA could then be held on ,iednesday and Thursday, April 26 and 27. It was thought desirable to suggest that a joint session be held with the AAIP & S and that the AAIP <5- 3 would probably wish to hold a concurrent session over part of Wednes day and Thursday but that the objection to the concurrent sessions could be obviated by proper selection of subjects. It was suggested that; greater emphasis be placed this year on engineering and control measures for prevention of occupational diseases than has been accorded this phase of the work in past years. It was also suggested that, since the AIHA was originally or ganized and has continued to develop with a strong industrial representation and interest, a paper on the accomplishments and opportunities of industrial hygiene by private agencies such as the industries themselves, the insurance companies, universities and private consultants might be appropriate. There has been much in the literature concerning the work of the governmental industrial hygiene agencies and we are all very glad to see recognition of the splendid work being done by them but there has been no discussion or recognition of the work of the private agencies since Dr. McConnell prepared a paper on this subject for J.A.M.A. some several years ago. Some person who has carried on techni cal work with industry could advantageously be the author of such a paper, Barnes, uon ~7 z n/ o 2 Littlefield or Harrold being suggested as a possible author. Dr. Holmblad had [kindly invited Lajor Brandt to join us at the joint program committee meeting. In addition to the three members of our Program Committee, others attending the meeting were*' Dr. Holmblad, ,,r. Dewquist, Dr. Dander, ^r. Sappington, Dr. Hammond Lr. ,'lenn Gardiner, Dr. vjharles Drueck, or. dlobe and hiss Victoria Stralko, represent ing the American Association of Industrial Hurses. Liss Cairns, or. Holmblad*s secre tary, was present; and took notes of the proceedings from wuich a transcript is to be available, ,/e will send this to you next week. In view of the availability of this transcript, this report uf mine will be very brief with emphasis on items of especial importance to our; group. . Hollowing Dr. Holmblad's information that the governmental group had suggested that tneir scientific papers be given on Monday and reports of the committees on Tuesday, u t . Dewquist stated that it might be well for the Chairman of our Program Committee to suggest to the NCGIH that they keep in mind that rany of our group will arrive on Tuesday and that it would be very greatly appreciated if the division of their program between Monday and Tuesday could be so arranged that papers of interest to us be given on Tuesday. I am:sure that the AIHA does not wish to imply that the governmental groui should arrange their program to suit our wishes but I believe that a letter from you to the KCGIH suggesting the desirability of making the foregoing arrangement would be in order. On talking with ,r. Holmblad this morning, he felt that this is a matter which should be arranged between the I.CGIH and AIHA. The AAIP & S consider that their needs could be most adequately taken oare of by plac ing their meeting days on ,,ednesday, Thursday and Friday April 26-28. On Wednesday and Thursday mornings they would schedule clinics, we would then plan to have engineer ing and technical papers and subjects of little interest to those physicians who will be attending the clinics on ,,ednesday and Thursday mornings to avoid conflict of interest. On ,,ednesday afternoon, there would be the only joint session of the AAIP & S and one AIHA. At this: meeting subjects of interest to both groups would b e discussed. On Thursday afternoon there would be the only sessions running concurrently by the AIHA and the AAIP & 8* ,,e would nave our business meeting together with some scienti fic papers which would be so selected as to hold no interest for those industrial medical men primarily concerned with traumatic surgery. The main objection to the con-current sessions would be met by careful selection of subject matter at each of the two sessions. It ,,as our thought that the AIHA would prefer to be invited to the banquet of the .AAIP & S rather tlian to have a separate banquet of our own on some earlier evening. ,.e would of course wish to nave the a IHA president and the president-elect at the speakers* table with brief comments by each and an introduction of the president elect. Dr. lobe suggested that the industrial physicians would be interested in having a paper on the subject of checking the plant for health and accident hazards t o b e given by an industrial hygienist. In response to a request of the industrial physicians for medical subjects which we would wish at the joint' sessions, lajor Brandt suggested that we would be interested in ,,heir presentation of the medical phases of some of the -ioint industrial hygiene surveys which have been carried on by teams made up of indus- f?K$' p -7 r \ >"f n 3 trial hygienists* industrial hygiene engineers and industrial physicians. Hoffman and third choice of C. d. ..ilson. Any additional suggestions from you would be very much appreciated in the event that our first selection is not available.
