A transformer sitting on a barge loading dock on a canal ruptured spilling the 2000 liters of PCB. The canal leads to the Sambre River, which leads to the Meuse River, a drinking water supply for southern Belgium and northern France. The transformer belongs to Ateliers de Constructions Electriques de Charleroi S.A. (ACEC). Hainaut Sambre Co. is ACEC's subsidiary which manufactures transformers. Monsanto people at the scene believe that the PCB has probably settled to the bottom of the canal.
