REQUIREMENTS Asbestosis is a problem which we need to address. In order to do that, we need to review our past, current, and future practices. I would liVe you to put together a summary as to how we have managed the pipecoverers, etc. In the past. We need some answers to these questions: 1. What kind of a surveillance program did we have In Che past? 2. Did we notify the employes of the results including the presence of x-ray findings, such as pleural plaques? 3. Did we ever summarize the results (e.g., how many people potentially exposed to asbestos had pleural plaques)? 4. Did we do any epidemiological studies on asbestos exposure and causes? Please let me know Che answers to these questions sometime within the next two weeks. Also, please make suggestions as to how we should monitor these employees in the future. If we need to define a medical surveillance requirement which is different from the official standard approved by the Health Surveillance Council, let's do so. We will be discussing this topic in our future staff meetings. Perhaps we could do this some Tuesday when we don't have a speaker. Check with Fred Brenner on this.
