Goltra, M.D. Janet Smith0^ date July 31, 1986 subject Asbestos On July 16, 1986, John Stauter and I visited the Dubach and Calhoun facili ties. Bulk asbestos samples were collected from the Calhoun facility. Table I summarizes the results which were phoned to Dubach on July ?!, 1986. As a result of the survey, the following recommendations are submitted: 86-1 Calhoun Facility - All asbestos on the ground should be promptly removed utilizing wet methods, personal protective equipment and proper disposal techniques. This methodology was discussed with the operator during the survey. Any exposed or deteriorated asbestos insulation should be covered to prevent release to the environment. 86-2 86-3 Calhoun/Dubach Facilities - Employees, such as insulators, who have the potential for intermittent exposures to asbestos during main tenance activities must wear, at a minimum, half mask respirators with HEPA filters. Attachment I lists an example of an appropriate half mask respirator. Employees, who are required to wear respirators, must be fit tested and have medical examinations to determine that they are physically able to perform the work and use the equipment. A fit testing form is included in Attachment II. A Medical Evaluation form is found in Attachment III. The Corporate Asbestos Handling policy, found in the Kerr-McGee Health Guidelines number 9.6.1, can be utilized as a reference for the asbestos recommendations.
