Dear Mrs JANIS WOODSON REYNOLDS,
Further to the registration of 1 counter from your laboratory, you will receive in a very short delay a set of 15 microscope slides to be evaluated.
Please find enclosed a guidance note explaining the whole procedure, and 1 form for reporting counting results.
It is essential that the countings are carried out in less than 1 week in order to reduce the delay of the exchange.
After counting, please send the set of slides to the next laboratory in your country, to the following address (label enclosed) :
Mrs J. KIMBRELL NUTURN CORPORATION GRIZZLY LANE SMITHVILLE TN 37166 U.S.A.
Thank you very much for your kind cooperation.
Yours sincerely.

GUIDANCE NOTE TO TAKE PART IM THE 1991 - A.I.A. FIBRE COUNTING TRIAL
(Slide Exchange)
Object of the Slide Exchange :
Three essential objects can be foreseen when taking part in the A.I.A. slide exchange :
- To position oneself amongst a number of other experimented fibre dust counters.
- To contribute to a better harmonization of the workplace exposure measurement.
- To gain confidence in the exposure levels measured to comply with national regulations and implement preventive control measures accordingly.
Registration of Participants : Each participant (individual or laboratory) shall fill in the enclosed "Registration Form" and return the same to L.H.C.F. (with a copy to your National Association) Note : It is essential to return this form as soon as possible to allow for the earliest and most practical circulation of slides in various countries.

2.-
Slide Exchange Procedure :
Each participant (individual or laboratory) will receive a set of 15 slides including asbestos and non-asbestos ones.
It is essential that slides are counted under a normal procedure and every effort should be made to avoid giving them any preferential treatment.
Indeed, the slide exchange will hardly serve a useful purpose for those counters who do not strictly apply aroutine laboratory counting method.
Your attention is further drawn on the followings :
1) - The counting duration should be the same as the usual one.
2) - Slides should only be counted once.
3) - Different results on the same slide counted by several individuals from the same laboratory should be reported without further evaluation.
After Counting :
In order to produce the final A.I.A. report within a reasonable time schedule, it is imperative that each set of slides remains no longer than 1 week in the same laboratory.
Results of the countings should be reported directly to the L.H.C.F. preferably by Fax (33.1) 42 94 98 86.
Detailed instructions explaining how to forward the set of slides to the next destination are given in the accompanying letter to each participant.
Provisional Data Sheet Report :
Upon returning their individual "Data Form Report" (copy enclosed), participants will receive a provisional "Position Data Sheet" (copy enclosed) showing how they have performed in comparison with the previous evaluations already available for these slides.
This is primarily intended to give every counter early indications showing his approximate classification (Group 1, 2, or 3), which in turn is expected to be useful for modifying the laboratory practices if necessary.
./...
CTD026225
3.Final Report : An anonymous complete report on the 1991 slide exchange will be issued in the beginning of 1992 and circulated to all AIA members. Participants will be provided with a personal copy showing their final position following the latest statistical evaluation made by the L.H.C.F.

AIA Fibre Counting Trial 1991
Addressees will recall their participation in the Asbestos International Association's Asbestos Counting Trial 1990. The final report of this trial was published in March 1991.
We are hopeful that you will again participate in this worthwhile effort during 1991' Enclosed is a letter dated April 17, 1991 from the AIA (Mr. Daniel Bouige) which provides detailed information on the 1991 trial. It will be of note that the slide exchange for 1991 will again cover a new field of expertise in fibre counting as a result of the 1989 AIA Dust Advisory Panel Colloquium held in Jersey (U.K.). Specifically, the 1991 trial will relate to the multi-fibre environment as mentioned in the enclosure.
Please complete the attached registration form and return it directly to L.H.C.F. in Paris, France, with a copy to this Association (AIA/NA). This form should be completed at your earliest convenience in order to facilitate participation in the 1991 trial.

REF : FIBRE COUNTING TRIAL 1991
We sent you recently a copy of the LHCF (Laboratory for Hygiene and the Control of Fibres). Report (AIA Circular of 29/03/91) on the 1990 Counting Trial. This slide exchange appears to have made once again a useful contribution to all the laboratories involved in asbestos counting.
The slide exchange for 1991 will again cover a new field of expertise in fibre counting (non-asbestos) as a result of the 1939 DAP colloquium in Jersey (U.K.) and the new AIA object, both being related to the multi-fibre environment which is arising from a diversification of fibre types in use.
Would you please circulate the LHCF Guidance Note (attached) to all companies or laboratories which may be interested in participating to the 1991 Slide Exchange, advising them to return their registration form as soon as possible to the LHCF.
The analysis of the results will, of course, remain anonymous as before but each participant will personally receive a provisional position data sheet shortly after he has returned his results.
As a successful exchange relies on prompt responses, we shall ask your involvement for circulation of the slides from one laboratory to another (1).
Upon receipt of the package of the 15 slides, please ensure that careful mailing instructions are given when forwarding them within a week to the next laboratory.
Thanks in advance for your collaboration.
(1) Unless otherwise agreed between you and LHCF Enel.

GUIDANCE NOTE TO TAKE PART IN THE 1991 A.I,A, FIBRE COUNTING TRIAL
(Slide Exchange)
Object of the Slide Exchange : Three essential objects can be foreseen when taking part in the A.I.A. slide exchange :
- To position oneself amongst a number of other experimented fibre dust counters.
- To contribute to a better harmonization of the workplace exposure measurement.
- To gain confidence in the exposure levels measured to comply with national regulations and implement preventive control measures accordingly.
Registration of Participants : Each participant (individual or laboratory) shall fill in the enclosed "Registration Form" and return the same to L.H.C.F. (with a copy to your National Association) Note : It is essential to return this form as soon as possible to allow for the earliest and most practical circulation of slides in various countries.

Slide Exchange Procedure :
Each participant (individual or laboratory) will receive a set of 15 slides including asbestos and non-asbestos ones.
It is essential that slides are counted under a normal procedure and every effort should be made to avoid giving them any preferential treatment.
Indeed, the slide exchange will hardly serve a useful purpose for those counters who do not strictly apply a routine laboratory counting methodj.

3.Final Report : An anonymous complete report on the 1991 slide exchange will be issued in the beginning of 1992 and circulated to all AIA members. Participants will be provided with a personal copy showing their final position following the latest statistical evaluation made by the L.H.C.F.
