The latest on that reported by Capitol Correspondent Jim Dygert from Lansing. JIM DYGERT: One of the first things the legislature will do when it reconvenes October 26th is hold a hearing on a matter related to the recently discovered contamination of coho salmon. A hearing is schedu led for 8:00 PM, October 26th in the House chamber on a bill to ban polyvinyl chloride containers. The sponsor of the bill, Representative James F. Smith of Davison, says that PCB, the chemical found in dan gerous levels in coho and other fish of the salmon family taken from Lake Michigan, is a component in the production of polyvinyl chloride containers. Smith says that polyvinyl chloride caused air pollution problems in the incineration of waste and in disposing of the con tainers. _He savs there mav be a connection between these containers and high levels of PCB in the fish. State officTals' have~wafned~the public against eating more than one meal per week of coho or other salmon from Lake Michigan while efforts continue to determine how the chemical got into the fish in such quantities.
