Dear "B. J. **:
Since our discussion on the telephone a few
-
days ago, it appears that I should have mentioned to you
that under the instigation of M B Tecry, late president of
the Division, an extended program on scrap utilization was
aarried on for over a year w i t h no thought of the environmental
approach but enturely with the idea of economics. In fact, at
the time we did not have the asbestos problem anywhere. To
the best of m y recollection, this study was carried ojit at
Winchester, but I believe Prank Tayler could recall the program
as it was done by manufacturing and not research.
The study included scrap segments of lining,
as well as the material from the dust collector, w i t h all ]finds
of percentages and many formulas using the dynomometer as the
evaluation tool, followed by some customer trials. I dont recall
the final results, but here were the conclusions to the best of
my memory: (a) Scrap from dust collectors could not be used
mainly because such dust contained too much iron backing and
grinding grit, changing the properties of the material.
(b) Scrap from saw cuts and bag segments when ground
seem to offer more hope. As I recall, the difficulty was that
unless scrap is segregated, use of too much in a formula that
is comprised of iteelf many formulas creates loss of control
in the product being offered- where much smaller amounts of
scrap are involved, then it becomes a point of economics as to
its usage. Mr. Terry was very persistant in his efforts, but
his objectives were entirely those of economics at the time.
Aside from the "asbestos''problem, it has always
seemed a pity to discard to the dump so m uch scrap as we do.
It might be worth your while to check with Tayler, unless you
are already familiar with the previous studies made. Possibly,
Harry King and Jack Troester can recall this previous extended
study.
