Cell densitiesa,reas under the growth curveand growth ratesat 72 and 96 hours were alsoevaluatedfornormalityand homogeneity ofvariances usingtheShapiro-Wilks'tsestand Badett'stest,respectivelyT.he treatmentgroups were then compared to the controlusing Dunnett'stest. Resultsofthestatisticaanlalyses were used todeterminethe NOEC values.
AnalyticalMethodology: Analyses oftestsolutionswere performed at WildlifIenternationaLltd.using high performance liquicdhromatography withmass spectrometridcetection(HPLC/MS). When determiningthe concentrationofthe testsubstance inthetestsolutionst,hesame and most prominentpeak response forperfluorooctanesulfonawtaes used. No attemptwas made to quantifyon the basisof individuailsomeric components. The LOQ (limiotfquantitatiowna)s 0.115 mg/L inthisstudy. The mean percentrecoveryofmatrixfortificatioansalyzed concurrently duringsample analysiswas 99.1.Samples collectedattestinitiatihoand. measured valuesfrom 82.0 to98.1% ofnominal. Measured valuesfor samples takenat72-hours ranged from 91.7 to 105% ofnominal. Measured valuesforsamples taken at96-hours ranged from 90.3 to 102% ofnominal. Forthe abioticcontrolsm,easured valuesforsamples taken at72-hoursranged from 81.9 - 105% ofnominaland forsamples taken at 96-hours,90.3- 103% of nominal.

Observations: After96 hours ofexposure,therewere no signsof aggregation,flocculatioonradherence ofthe algaetothe flasksinthe negativecontrolorany testtreatmentgroup. Inadditiont,herewere'no noticeablechanges incellcoloror morphology when compared tothe negativecontrola,lthougha few cellsappeared enlargedinthe 86 and 179 mg/L treatmentgroups. ReversibilityofGrowth InhibitionT:he 179 mg/L treatmentgroup was maximallyinhibiteadfter96-hours.Aliquotsofthe testsolutionwere dilutedwithalgalmedium and culturedforfivedays. Based on the growth observed intherecoveryphase, the effecton algalgrowth was found to be algistatic.
CONCLUSIONS
The potassium perfluorooctanesulfona9t6e-hourECso and 95% confidenceintervaflorSelenastrum capficornutumwas determined using threecalculatiomnethods. By celldensity,itwas 71 (66-73)mg/L, by area under thegrowth curve itwas 71 (67-74)mg/L and by growth rate 126 (115-138)mg/L. The 96-hourNOEC was determinedby Dunnett's procedure(p < 0.05)to be 44 mg/L usingallthreemethods. No-signsof aggregation,-ffocculatiorn,adherence were noted inany ofthe test solutionsorthe controls.This testsubstance was determinedtobe algistatic.

The effectofPFOS upon Selenastrumcapricornutumwas determinebdy evaluatindgifferenceisn celldensitieasr,easunderthegrowth curveand growthrates.Mean valueswere usedto calculatgerowth mlubrttonforeach 24-hourperiod.Mean celldensitieasr,easunderthegrowthcurveand growthratesand theircorrespondinpgercentmlubitiovnaluesarepresentedinTables5,6 and 7,respectivelCye.lldensity, areaunderthe growth curveand growth ratevaluesforeach individuarleplicataerepresentedin AppendicesIV, V and VL respectivelyE.CIO, EC50 and EC90 valuesand 95% confidencleimits calculatefdoreach 24-hourintervablasedon celldensitya,reaunderthegrowthcurveand growthrateare presentedinTables8,9 and 10,respectively.
