Monsanto ,,0 ,...(. DATC UtJCCT RCFCRCNCC TO : w. r. Richard Research-Center December 8, 1969 BOB BINNING CALL ON EAvE Hill pcb request for PROPOSAL PCB AT ANNISTON FILE H. S. Bergen HBERG W. A. Kuhn WKUHN R. M. Kountz RKOUN Dave Hill, F.W.P.C.A. at Athens, Georgia called Binning at MRC 12/5/69 about a proposal to build a demonstration unit to control PCB's in water at the Anniston Plant. Monsanto had not replied to Hill's earlier request. This time Hill Indicated some development funds might be available as part of the demonstration unit. Bill Kuhn, Hill Williams, Joe Landwehr, Bob Binning and W. R. Richard had a conference call to discuss the problem. Anniston reported 5 water streams containing Aroclor, 1) 65 gpm 2) 250 gpm 2) 100 gpm 4) 90 gpm 5) 700 gpm 2 lbs/day 8 lbs/day 6 lbs/day 11 lbs/day 2-11 ppm 1-11 ppm ' 1.5-20 ppm (HC1 sewer) 2.0-60 ppm (warehouse sewer) 0.5-1.0 ppm (limestone pit) 1000 gpm - Total stream containing Aroclor Total plant stream 58 ppb Aroclor. We talked about 1 pits for gross separation 2 coalescers to break emulsions 5 carbon-acid clay-limestone adsorbers + regeneration of adsorber. k gross incineration requirements - where catalytic cracking might be , employed. 5 stream dilution to reach <10 ppb. Need estimate of how big a job the disposal research and plant demonstration unit would be. Proposal will have to be built around acid clay adsor ption + regeneration with some flexibility built into preliminary research and development work. We had little feel for how many & or how big a demon stration unit would have to be. Govt, to pay 70* of the cost of the demonstration unit; 20# to Monsanto.
