Randall and the writer to Inform us that the subject material, which is described as Felted Asbestos Sheet type 83S and purchased In accordance with Ffaudler Material Specification PS-0413, has been discontinued from manufacture as of May 1, 1980. Before manufacture had been discontinued, 'an Inventory of the material had been produced by Johns-Manville. The Inventory is sufficient to meet the normal requirements of the Pfaudler Co. for a period of one year. For all practical purposes, Pfaudler is the only user of the 83S material. The primary reason for the discontinuance of the subject product, as well as other sheet products which incorporate asbestos, is that due to governmental restrictions for the use of asbestos has prompted many of the ultimate users to specify asbestos-free products. Johns-Manville could continue to make asbestos sheet material but they are not willing to risk a cross contamination problem with the asbestos-free products. The newly introduced CRT-F gasket by Pfaudler is one alternative. The CRT-F gasket incorporate.', outer inserts (Material Specifica tion PS-0423) of filled ion which are asbestos-free and fibre- free. These gaskets jr<: very expensive and if used to replace CRT gaskets would result in "overkill". - For a number of years Johns-Manville has been supplying Pfaudler with samples of experimental asbestos-free, outer insert material. Hone of these samples has passed our test criteria. JohnsManvllle has tvo new experimental products, one of which or a variation thereof, they feel will meet our needs. The pricing of these products is very favorable - about half the price of the current product. Samples of these materials should be available for testing by June 1. The Carlock Co. Is also working on a low cost alternative to their asbestos-free/ffbre-free Gylon #35151 which will be asbestos-!ree but not fibre-free. Samples of this material --7-p> will also be available for testing by June 1.. u The Test Center will pursue this problem with vigor--and - iden tify a viable solution in ample time to permit a smooth tran sition from the present asbestos material to the new asbestosfree product. .GB/naz 1/ ims ^ ' `"'ll S'*'''*' M lo.il 4 f-'W'-s 1 3 I'l* `I " ~rwA', ^ iof-e. jv*-, mc/lt LifuI-| IM 2.^0 (Jiet ili^Xe^fir).
