An e x p e rim e n ta l s tu d y , i n a number o f v e h ic le s i n v a r io u s s t a t e s o f m aintenance and in v a rio u s ty p e s of ro ad o p e ra tio n , of th e amount, chem ical n a tu re , and p h y s ic a l s ta te o f th e le a d compounds d ischarged in to th e atm osphere, w ith p a rtic u la r emphasis on th e sm aller p a r tic le s lik e ly to rem ain a irb o rn e . T his study would have to be c a r r ie d out w ith f u e ls n e a r th e 3 ml TEL l e v e l and a ls o a t h ig h e r l e v e l s i n o rd e r t o e s t a b l i s h th e ex ten t to which hazardous m a te ria ls a re being exhausted in to th e atmosphere a t p re se n t, and to estim ate what th e e ffe c t of in creasin g th e le a d le v e l would b e . Because D r. Kehoe im p lie s t h a t he would re q u ire a good deal of th is type of inform ation before he could a c tu a lly progress v e ry f a r w ith h i s own in v e s t i g a t i o n s (s e e p a ra g ra p h C, below ) we would su g g est t h a t t h i s work be planned to be e s s e n tia l ly com plete w ith in 1 y e a r. e envision th e equipment re q u ire d fo r t h i s as fo llo w s: m u ltic y lin d e r en g in es on one dynamometer ( to in v e s tig a te th e e f f e c ts of exhaust system s u rfa c e and te m p e ratu re and a ls o to t e s t new te c h n iq u e s ), 2 ro a d v e h ic le s (to ob tain th e bulk of th e d a ta ), a v a ila b ility of o th er v e h ic le s from tim e t o tim e f o r p e rio d s o f about 1 day; ( to show, h o p e fu lly , t h a t v e h ic le make i s not a very im portant v a ria b le ), and apparatus fo r c o lle c tio n of the t o t a l s o lid s exhausted by a v e h ic le on th e road (p a rt of t h i s equipment i s a lre a d y on ord er) .
