PITTSBURGH CORNING CORPORATION Jamary 6t 1963 v Er. R. V. Sagnette Vice President C. E. Thurston tod Sons, Ino. 700 Dinwiddle Areme F. 0. Box 968 Richmond 7, Virginia Deer Mr. Sagnette: This is in reply to poor recent inquiry about the health hazards of dust from cutting UUIBESTOS, FQAKTHAJ3 and F1ASOLAS. With UNIBESTOS there are no haccrdods eheaieala in the dust from cutting. However, during long cutting operations, the air rary become laden vith fine particles of Anosite asbestos fibers which may canes a feeling of discomfort to the workman. Our own workmen use a Dupor Respiretor manufactured by &. S. Cover Coapany and distributed by Fischer Scientific Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This Is an Inexpensive device costing about $2.00 vhieb the workman wears over hie nose that filters the dust particles froa the air. FOAXTHAKE contains no free iaoocynatea at the cutting stage. Since vc cut FOAXTHASE at our factory with a hot wire rather than a bandsaw, we have no information regarding sire of duct particles froa saw cut FQAXTHAKE. In cutting POAKTEAHE vith either saw or hot wire, sons Freon is released. A build up of Freon in the atan sphere ern cause an explosive condition in the saaa narmer as spraying paint or other volatile liquids in an enclosed area. We recasasnd that the work area bo trail ventilated vith exhaust fans to alleviate this condition. For the comfort of the workman, vo suggest the use of the respirator as trail. FOAKOLAS also contains no ingredients which are hazardous to workman. For your added benefit, we are attaching an industrial hygiano report on health hazards of FQAKOLAS. The work ares where FQAKOLAS ia being cut should bo veil ventilated and the respirator should be worn by workmen for comfort. We hope that this information will prove useful and that you will let us know if we cay assist you further with this natter. Very truly yours. TWMtKae Attachment be: R. E. Fuha T. W.
