Walker Julius Mire CCR 000019403 the Greater Lake Charli Chamber of Commerce April 17, 1984 TO FELLOW MEMBERS OF THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: I have been selected to chair a committee made up of other Chamber Board mem bers that is a task force to oppose the repeal of the Right-to-Work legislation and oppose the legislation which would change the Workmen's Compensation Law. There is at this time a bill which has been prefiled that is designed to repeal the Right-to-Work Law. Organized labor has labeled it as No. 1 priority. As a com munity, Lake Charles cannot afford to have this Right-to-Work Law repealed. With 15% unemployment, repeal of the Right-to-Work Law would devastate us as a community beyond repair. It would be signaling the rest of the country that we as a community are not willing to invite new businesses into our area. We would be the only state in the South without a Right-to-Work Law. We as Chamber of Commerce members have a responsibility to the Lake Charles community to vocalize our opinions loud and clear to our area legislators on how we feel concerning this matter. Other bills have been prefiled to revise the current Workmen's Compensation Law. it is our position at the Chamber of Commerce that this law has been in effect for such a short period of time that it is too early to do away with a law that has such a trememdous impact on each and every one of our businesses. This law needs time before we throw it aside and try something different. The Office of Workers Compensation has said that over 90% of all claims have been settled without dispute. We have sent a letter to the area legislators to ask that they make their positions clear on these two bills. It is time for the silent majority of this community to speak out. Too often we complain but we take no action to change things. It is time to act, and not react after the fact. We request that you write each legislator a personal letter stating your position on these two issues. Also feel free to call these individuals and tell them how you feel. Politicians are greatly affected when the letters begin to pile up on their desk. We at the Chamber cannot emphasize enough how these two bills will affect our com munity development.
