Clearview Pkway - Suite 328 Jefferson, La. 70121 ATTN: Joe Tusa, M.D. ^ ^ ~J Dear Doctor Tusa: Our Corporate Medical group has recommended that our Metairie maintenance mechanics be included in the Shell Asbestos Medical Surveillance program. These workers normally only perform incidental, minor asbestos insulation removal associated with equipment repairs. Any significant asbestos insulation removal work is contracted out to trained, skilled insulation contractors. Nonetheless, recent regulatory changes by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) lowering the permissible exposure level of asbestos, has prompted us to review our asbestos surveillance programs. As a result, we have elected to include all Metairie maintenance ' mechanics in the surveillance program. This will also include any employee entering the maintenance group in the future. The Metairie maintenance mechanic group currently consists of thirteen workers as listed on Attachment I. The criteria for the Shell Asbestos Medical Surveillance program is summarized in your copy of the blue "SHELL OCCDPATIONAL HEALTH PROGRAM" manual, section C'l.l. Attachment II contains several additional guidance memos on implementation of the Shell asbestos medical surveillance program. Please consult with our Dr. S.R. (Sally) Cowles, Medical Director * Health Surveillance/Epidemology in Houston (713-241-3974) or Dr. R.S. Marnoy, as you set up the program should you have any questions. Helen Trahan in our Metairie Plant Employee Relations group has ordered the necessary forms to be utilized in this program and will forward them to your office upon receipt. She will also coordinate the scheduling of our mechanics for the examination with your staff. Please initiate preparations for beginning this program and advise us when you are prepared to start. Please note that all Asbestos chest X-Ray's must be read by a radiologist trained in "B Reading". The attached memo dated July 12, 1988 by Dr. Cowles in Attachment II provides further guidance in this regard.
