Casting was done in dry sand molds, using a special sand adapted to the high density of lead. Flanged cast lead rings are bolted to the inlet and delivery openings and are intended to be welded or ''burned" to the sheet lead flues or ducts which convey the gases. The impellers are fabricated of steel plates welded to the shaft. The steel is covered with 14 in. of lead homogeneously bonded; that is, the lead is actually fused to the steel structure. The homogeneous bonding process is also used for applying lead linings to steel vessels for chemical processes operating under vacuum or at high temperatures. Fans of this type are still in ;ation in sulphuric acid plants after more than 25 years of continuous ser vice. The solid lead housing and lead covered impellers present the greatest possible practical resistance to the cor rosive action of the acid vapors. The accompanying photographs, however, are of new fans and were taken in the shop of the United States Pipe and Foundry Co. of Burlington. New Jersev, where thev were manufactured. This tower operates to con serve nitrogen trioxide gas and return it. dissolved in concentrated acid, to the Glover tower where it combines with water and burner gas to produce more concentrated acid. Both of these towers, as well as the condensing chambers through which the fumes pass on their way from one tower to the other, are constructed of lead. Large amounts of sulphuric acid are used in the manufacture of fer tilizer and it is common practice for fertilizer manufacturers to operate sulphuric acid plants. Part of the plant of one such installation is pic tured in the accompanying photo graphs which show construction work on a new Gav-Lussac tower for the Acme Fertilizer Co. of Wilmington. Delaware. The new tower is supported by a steel structure which replaces an old one built of wood. It is 11 ft. square and 43 ft. high and is topped by a 24 in. cylindrical lead vent stack which extends 26 ft. higher. The bot tom and lower 15 in. of the walls are of 24-lb. sheet lead and the remainder of the walls are of 15-lb. lead. The vent stack is of 10-lb. lead. The pictures show how the sheets --2-- of lead are hoisted to the top of the framework as thev are unrolled. Lead straps are welded to the sheet at the levels of the steel structural members to which thev are bolted for support of the walls. After the leadwork is completed the tower will be lined with acid resistant brick and filled with a ceramic pack ing material over which the acid trickles to expose a maximum of liquid surface to the gas from the chambers. The top or roof of the tower is also of sheet lead supported on steel crosspieces and all connecting ducts and acid nozzles are of lead. The nozzles, four of which are shown on page two, are provided with bell-shaped lead caps which form a gas-tight seal when immersed in water contained between a double curb around the openings. In addition to its simplicity and economy the lead calked joint possesses the character istic of being easily restorable to its original tightness and effectiveness should it be disturbed or moved once it is in place. Indeed it will endure movement to a surprising degree with out requiring any restoration. Examples of such movement are commonly found where it has been necessary to move or lower cast iron water mains to make way for grading incident to changes in streets and roads or buildings. Such changes are often made while mains are in service under pressure without causing leaks or breaks of anv kind. A recent case where such movement was accomplished occurred in Denver. Colorado, where a 55-year-old water main four blocks long was lowered 3 feet and moved horizontally two feet without a single leak. This operation, which was necessi tated bv a change in street grade, was accomplished bv digging a ditch to the new low level alongside the main and clearing away the earth under the pipe except for bulkheads at intervals of 24- feet. The earth bulkheads were then cut away a few inches at a time, lowering the pipe gradually to its new position. Because of the inherent flexibility of the lead calked joints in this line the movement w as accomplished with out a single leak although pressure and service to consumers was main tained. However, as a precaution against possible development of leaks all joints were recalked before the ditch was backfilled. Had there been any leaks the simple procedure of recalking would have stopped them. This means of restor ing joints to their original pressuretight condition is not available if in initial cost of the main when lead is used buys many years of economiai maintenance. Two of these houses, the Jessup House and one at present the property of the Christian Science Society, face each other across the busy highway and for all their age occupy important places in the daily life of the com munity. Another has become the office of a busy manufacturing concern, w ith a factory nearby. These three houses, like so many other old New England homes are, at present, as they were in the past, painted with pure white lead paint. Jessup House, built in 1807, is unusual in plan and decoration. However, like so many others it is protected by pure white lead paint.
