Crook Personnel Manager Corning Fiberglass Kaylo Division Berlin New Jersey Corp. Dear Mr. Crooks On March 24 1960. personnel from this Program collected atmospherie dust samples in your plant The resulting dust counts are reported in Table I. In general these show a low dust court however several results also indicate that the dust concentrations may approach or somembot exceed the threshold limit of five millions of particles per cubic foot of air This limit is recognized for asbestos containing airborne dusts . . . The zirborne dust is a composite mixture of particles of asbestos silica and lime as well as the calcium interaction produc referred to by the trade sam of kaylo In order to reduce the in- plant cirborne concentration of this dust the following recommendations are made 1 General ventilation - Improve the general ventilation of the building to augment the local embsust ventilation as already installed at many locations along the production machinery . 2. Existing exhaust ventilation systen - Service the ex- isting system with respect to enclosure devices dust loading and general repair in order to secure the full efficiency of the incorporated design features to collect the dust at local sources of emission Note . In a preliminary tour of the plant it was noted that considerable dust escaped at # sam in the flatware finishing line This condition boxover was corrected at the . time of the above study 6513 PLAINTIFF'S NoNo.. EXHIBIT Blumberg K 589 : Corning Faverglass Corp. Berlin hem Jersey 2 April 14 1960 Bousekeening - Clean the floors particularly along and under the flatware and roundware fabrication lines Note A considerable amount of bulk or jumpy material accumulated along the production lines This material will undergo further pulverization on the floor resulting in airborne dust concentra tions in the general atmosphere of all plact gr80s 4 Exhaust esses from fork lifts - Redirect the exhaust gases from the fork lifts preferably and above the lifts This would overcome the tendency of these gases from blowing dusts from the floors stacked or unloaded pallets where some dusty material will accumulate Respiretor procr31 - Continue to use U.S. Bureau of Super approved type respirators for preusonoconiosis dust in those locations where dust arises beyond the effective control of the local exhaust ventilation system This refers to several intermittent opera- tions such as looding or unloading and charging the materials from cars lifts and into mixing hoppers Thank you for your attention to this matter Very truly yours E.
