Since we are having more asbestos related incidents, there is a concentrated effort Division-wide to educate everyone. Since people are reluctant to call the ambulance because of lights, sirens, etc., they are taking people to Medical in pickups, cars, etc., thus creating more potential prob lems .
As our part in correcting this problem, do not respond to asbestos related problems with lights and sirens, including Scouts, especially when the caller says it is asbestos and the person is showering.

CONTROL PROCEDURES FOR
ASBESTOS RELATED INCIDENTS
Plant personnel should be aware of the corrective actions to be taken when personnel inadvertently disturb asbestos containing materials and may potentialy be exposed to airborne asbestos fibers.
Potential asbestos exposures are to be treated in the same manner as a chemical exposure. Safety standard S-122 clearly defines the required action to be taken in the event of an exposure. Once the employee or supervisor has initiated the correct response, additional requirements to seal off the affected area and perform the required corrective actions are defined in IH Standard 140, Section X.
A review of the responsive actions are:
Exposure Control
1. Shower Personnel believed to be exposed to asbestos shall shower to remove asbestos material from the clothing to reduce further exposure and tracking of asbestos material.
2. Call Emergency Services on 1-2-3 Plant personnel are to call Emergency Services on 1-2-3 for transportation of employee to medical and to alert medical of the situation.
3. Contact Plant Supervision Plant supervision is to be informed of the situation and actions taken. Plant supervision will then initiate appropriate site control to prevent further exposure at the site.
Site Control
1. Isolate area Plant personnel wearing protective equipment shall barrier off the area and place appropriate warning signs. Within a facility, disconnect and/or seal off ventilation units.
2. Communicate Inform employees within the facility of the situation and to avoid entering area. Contact Industrial Hygiene Services for assistance.
3. Clean-up operations Conduct clean-up operations as per IH-140 (Asbestos Containing Material) ensuring that workers are trained and protected with appropriate respiratory and protective clothing.
Plant supervision should review all appropriate standards to ensure compliance with plant procedures.
