MINUTES 07 THE DUCT SYSTEMS COMMITTEE MEETING NATIONAL INSULATION MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION New York, N. Y. As soon as it is received, the tests will be started as soon thereafter as possible. AIR EROSION TESTS It was reported two tests are yet to be completed. Testing is scheduled to be completed by April 15, 1967. Owens-Corning is to get Kettering Laboratories to write an analytical report on the tests. FM CALORIMETER TESTS It was agreed to conduct calorimeter tests at FM cn lined sheet metal ducts and wrapped sheet metal ducts as follows: (a) 1-1/2 pcf GB Vitralite 150 with 9^A coating. (b) 1-1/2 pcf OC PF 338 with 90A coating. Cc) 0.65 pcf, 1", JM with FSX covering (d) 0.65 pcf, 2", PPG with pSX covering , .C. E. Ernst is to supervise tests. Scheduled completion date is June 1 1967 2 pm PRirrr evaluation It was reported that FM had indicated they could complete this project by May 15, 1967. NFPA REVISIONS TO STD 90A The draft containing reasons for the changes will be circulated to the Committee for comment. MPS #31 The following was agreed to: Par. 1003-14.lh Supply and return air ducts used for heating and/or cooling shall be in sulated with (l) flexible blanket insulation conforming to HH-I-558 Type , or (2) rigid board insulation conforming to HH-I-558 Type or thermally equivalent duct complying with UL l8l. (1) In attics, garages, ventilated crawl spaces, and portions of ducts facing or abutting such areas: a. Flexible blanket insulation shall be 2" thick and shall be applied so that the average installed thickness shall not be less than 1 1/4" on round ducts, and not less than 1 l/z" between corners as applied on rectangular ducts. b. Rigid board insulation shall be 1" thick. c. Duct system material complying 'with U.L. l8l shall be thermally equivalent to par. (a) or (b). (2) When used for cooling, insulated ducts or their thermal equivalent shall be covered with a vapor barrier facing and *11, joints shall be sealed to limit vapor penetration. a. Vapor barriers shall have a maximum permeability of 0.5 perm (ASTM E 96 - Procedure A). b. Vapor barriers on separately insulated ducts shall have a minimum puncture resistance of 25 3each Units for laminated barriers and 45 PSI Mien Burst for aluminum foil. (3) a. Duct insulation and covering shall have a composite flame spread classification not to exceed 25 ar.d sacks deveio rating not to exceed 50, when tested in conformance wit UL Standard 723, and be so labeled as required by UL, lac. o, x: -3- b. Thermally equivalent ducts and covering shall have a composite flame spread classification not to exceed 25 and smoke developed rating not to exceed 50, meet all other requirements of UL Standard l8l for Class I Air Ducts, and be so labeled as required by UL, Inc. ROUGHNESS COEFFICIENTS The curve depicting roughness is to be transmitted to the Committee for com ment prior to April 15> 1967. OTHER BUSINESS (a) D. MacCurdy and/or Ambrose Walsh are to be at the next New York Meet ing to discuss the progress of the program. All copies of correspondence relating to the publicity program are to be sent to the product managers. (b) The revisions to the GSA Specification for Air Duct Systems are to be sent to GSA when the reinforcement tests are completed. (c) The next meeting is scheduled at the Shamrock Hilton, Houston, Texas, May 2, 1967, at 1:00 P.M. R. E. Naylor is to make arrangements.
