HEADS OSH MANAGERS ASBESTOS ABNORMALITY FOLLOWUP The initial evaluation of employees and pensioners considered to have had a high risk for asbestos exposure and development of asbestos-related abnormalities has been completed. Some 53,036 employees and 8,737 pensioners have been examined through November 1981. Approximately 1.0% of employees and 3.0% of pensioners were found to have asbestos-related abnormalities. Eight-six percent of the abnormalities found in employees and 80% of those in pensioners were diagnosed as benign asymptomatic conditions. Benign symptomatic cases accounted for 13% of the ab normalities found in employees and 16% in pensioners.- Malignant disease accounted for only 1% of the abnormalities found in employees and 4% in pensioners. Because of the long latency period between exposure to asbestos and development of a detectable abnormality, it is essential that we continue evaluation of our employees and pensioners through our periodic physical examination program. The Annual Medical Report, C-112, specified in the "Physicians Guidelines", Sec. 2.5, p. 2, would be an appropriate vehicle for transmitting this data to the Medical Division and subsequently to all departments. In addition, our Epidemiology Section is designing an Asbestos Case Registry, similar to our Cancer Registry, to prospectively follow all cases of asbestos-related abnormalities detected in our program.
