He does not fit the mold of Asbestos salesmen, yet. He seems to be interested in doing something rather than letting nature take its course. He used to work for Johns-Manville and still has some contacts there. He gave me a copy of the TORQUE AND HORSEPOWER CALCULATIONS that are attached. Hopefully thi3 will help you and John Holz with your questions. He also sent one copy to the factory so they can come up with some information on the propel brakes. John Holz only asked for this last March. Harvey we also talked about non-asbestos linings. I told him that Ken Schultz of our Quality Assurance group had been over s to see me because of some literature that we have in the field that states that Harnischfeger is using only non-asbestos linings on their Mining Shovels and he wanted to check this out. I told him that the propel brakes were still asbestos. H.K. Porter is interested in supplying us with some non asbestos material for a sample. I told Marty that we had been working with his (inept) predecessor for over two years to get some quotes and technical information on their non-asbestos linings. He promised me that he would put together a comprehensive package of prices and static coefficients so we could make-an evaluation. The lining we are talking about for (8) eight samples would be 15U63D1. We also talked about the history of the propel brakes and how we started buying from H.K.Porter when Johns-Manville went out of the molded lining business. We started running into linings breaking off due to the fact that H.K.Porter failed to remove the mold skin prior to shipping. This was discovered after we started that expense of fixturing and drilling each lining and then bonding and mechanically attaching them to the shoes. I told Marty that he should do some work on reviewing what bonding H.K.Porter would reccommend for our application and maybe we could try some linings without drilling. We currently 1981add approximately $12.00 per lining to drill. An additional benefit would be that we would not have to expose our people to the asbestos fibers if we eliminate the drilling. I did not calculate the savings we could realize by eliminating the drilling of the shoe. It would be an interesting experiment. Please let me know your thoughts.
