MINUTES of the OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH A SAFETY COMMITTEE MEETING NATIONAL INSULATION MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION Now York, Now York March 13, 1968 Pert of the Occupational Health & Safety Comnittee aet with a part of the Duct committee. The transactions of thia Booting as reported by Mr. J. M. Barnhart are attached. Following this combined Booting, there waa a brief aeeting of the Occu pational Health & Safety Conaittee. The following persons were present; L. B. Grant, M.fi. C. L. Sheekler F. H. Edwards H. Mesler J. Vyverberg PPG Industries Johns-Menville frame-Corning Ruberoid Owens-Coning Mr. Sheekler indicated that the work of the education Subcommittee was progressing satisfactorily. The asbestos pamphlet bad been prepared and circulated for coonents and/or approval, do fiber glass pamphlet will be available for full eoasittee review early in April, fir. Grant pointed out that it was his understanding that both these pa^hlots and the Educational Program for the cooing year were to be reviewed at a aeeting of the full eomittee. This was not done with the asbestos pamphlet, fir. Grant's ex perience was that the time limitation set for review by the subcommittee had passed befon he had had chance to review the pesublet. He felt this was unfortunate imasaich as ha would have Iliad to have seen either a reference to pre-es^loynent and periodic aedleal examinations of the workers or a specific limitation clearly indicating that the scope of the pamphlet did not include medical control procedures. As the pamphlet is at the present time, it will invite Justified criticism by the medical profession. Mr. Sheekler is of the opinion that eeoments with reference to medical ex aminations were inappropriate to include in the pamphlet. This reflects a basic disagreement within the ccmittee which aist be resolved at a later meeting of the full coonittee. Although it was discussed, no action was decided upon to resolve this basic difference of opinion. The fiber glass pamphlet draft prepared by the Education Subccoaittee will be reviewed at a coonittee meeting in Hew York on April l6t 1968. Mr. J. M. Barnhart wished to be advised on how he should handle requests coming to him for assistance in health related problems. The following general philosophy was agreed upon: le should first direct such requests to the manufacturer of the product in question. However, if no manufacturer can be identified or if the manufacturer of the product specifically re quested NXMA support, he should direct the request to fir. Qrant, Chairman of the Occupational Health A Safety Conittee, for appropriate action. 2 The current research proposals on fiber glass prepared by the Industrial Hygiene foundation were briefly discussed. As s result, it was apparent that there were a nuaber of questions that each coapany who had been asked to support the work wished to have the opportunity of discussing in a gen eral meeting with the Industrial Hygiene Foundation and representatives ef the companies whose support was being solicited. Dr. Grant agreed to con tact Dr. deTreville, the Managing Director of the Industrial Hygiene founda tion, and suggest such a meeting. Respectfully submitted, L. 8. Grant, M. D.
