Smith Executive Vico President American Dehydrators Association 800 Wept 47th Street Kansas City, Missouri 64112 Dear Mr. Smith: We have received your September 14 letter requesting information on Aroclor 1242 which was reported by our laboratory in some dehydrated alfalfa pellets. Aroclor 1242 is a Monsanto Chemical Company designation for one of the polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) compounds. There arc several PCB compounds utilized as industrial chemicals with a wide variety of uses, such as plasticizers, paint ingredients, water proofing compounds, in certain types of paper and inks, etc. Research on these compounds indicates that they are toxic to chickens and fish at low levels. For enforcement guidelines have been established by U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other federal and state agencies when PCB's are found in fish, poultry and milk. Presently there is no quidelino or , tolerance established for PCB's in foods which would leave them in the non-detectable category if a strict interpretation were applied to the law. We do not like to use a commercial designation such as Aroclor in reporting a chemical but since Monsanto is the basic manufacturer in the United States and we are now reporting about ten of the fourteen compounds presently encompassed in the terminology PCB, we prefer to be as specific as possible. , We hope we have given you some useful information but should you have additional questions please do not hesitate to let us hear from you.
